For my taste it's just too suburban. Not that it isn't a nice place to live, because it sure is and it's a great place to raise a family, but not for someone like me. It's too far from the cities.

If you are living downtown/uptown and working in Maple Grove the against the grain commute on 94 shouldn't be too bad. Just as long as you are careful to avoid the tunnel no matter where you are going.

Another plus of Uptown. Lake Calhoun, Lake Harriet, and Lake of the Isle. Not only is it beautiful, but you won't find another place with so many beautiful girls running around. Just do it!

First of all, if it's only a summer look into subleasing from a home-for-the-summer student in the UofM/Dinkytown area. Really fun area with lots of concert venues, bars, clubs and restaurants. Over the course of the summer definitely check out:

Mall of America
Twins Game
Canterbury Downs
Mystic Lake Casino (gambling age is 18 in MN)
Valleyfair
First Avenue (downtown concert venue with solid acts)
Minneapolis Aquatennial and Torchlight Parade
Fort Snelling (only if you LOVE history, otherwise it's kind of a "field trip" type of place)
Minnesota Zoo
Basilica Block Party
Minneapolis Institute of Art
Walker Art Center (this is where the famous "Spoonbridge is)
Guthrie Theatre
Orpheum Theatre (they have a "Student Rush" that makes tickets to a show like $20 w/ your ID. ISU card works, makes for a great date.)

As someone who commuted from Lakeville to Plymouth...avoid the south suburbs if you don't have flexible hours to avoid rush hour. 494 is generally a disaster. I'd recommend living as close as possible to your workplace or trying to commute "the wrong direction" when possible.

If you end up working in Arden Hills, Roseville isn't too bad a place to live in. You can be to either downtown Minneapolis or St. Paul in 5 to 10 minutes. It's where I lived when I first moved up here. If you do, try Maverick's on Lexington. Aside from Uptown or downtown, NE Minneapolis (depending on the neighborhood) is good for someone your age, too. Hit up Mayslack's for their roast beef or their hog and swiss.

As mentioned, you can probably find a good sublease near the U of M, in which case I'd recommend Stub and Herb's and Pizza Mesa in dinkytown. The reality is there are a ton of great places all over the city, with new hole-in-the-wall joints popping up all the time.

Yes, I'd like to add that NE Minneapolis is a great place for young people. Lots of great pubs and bars, plus St. Anthony Main area is beautiful.

I am 3X 20 years old but if I was 20 something I'd go for the Uptown area especially if it is for a summer internship. Can't beat Uptown and the Chain of Lakes for a 20-something.

Pracna on Main is the oldest bar in the cities which is kinda cool; great craft beer selection. Nye's around the corner is a great time with the right crowd. And a block away, Keegan's has trivia on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

As a 20-something spending a summer in the Twin Cities, I would definitely try to live in an urban setting. NE Minneapolis might be a great choice if you'll be working in the northern suburbs. NE is more of an up-and-coming area as opposed to Uptown, which was up-and-coming 20 years ago. Also, the Summit area of St. Paul has some great bars and restaurants like Happy Gnome and the Muddy Pig. St. Paul is definitely a different vibe (more laid back, more down to earth) than Minneapolis but also very cool.
