    They're using the metropolitan area which covers all of story county. Ames population was around 60,000 in the 2010 census.

    They are probably referring to the "Ames metro area" which includes towns like Gilbert, Boone, Nevada, etc.

    I don't think Ames MSA (its just story county) includes Boone, what you are referring to would be the Ames-Boone CSA which includes both MSA's and has a population of around 125,000 or so (can't remember exactly).

    MSA populations calculations are BS because they go based on pop and not density. You can continue to annex land and technically add pop while not really doing anything.

    I've been to 4 of them, seems reasonable in the my sampling. I've been to #1 & #2 and from everything I've heard #3 is similar to #2.
