But it really just comes down to varying opinions on supplements. Try some different protein shakes and see which one you have the best results with. Everybody's body is different and will react different ways. Do some experimenting and see which one you enjoy the most.

The protein shakes (well, more like smoothies) I make are usually about 1 cup frozen fruit, 3 spoonfuls of plain yogurt, 1 scoop whey protein, and water. I take these before bed since I don't have time to make any shakes between the time I finish working out and getting to work in the morning.

If you want to take it to the next level:
In a blender, mix:
Chocolate milk (or white milk, doesn't really matter at this point)
2 scoops of Ice Cream. (probably light or low fat ice cream)
Some fruits/berries (frozen or fresh)
1/2 cup of peanut butter (unless you want to keep it on the lean side. and peanut butter = more $)
2 raw eggs (optional. Only do if you aren't afraid of getting salmonella. haha)
That shake right there will be 10x better than any protein shake you can buy in powder form.
If you're on a tight budget, just mix some milk and ice cream in a blender. That alone will yield probably 30-40g of protein, depending on what kind of milk and ice cream and how much you use. So your saying I could got to Dairy Queen and buy a shake after working out?

And it would have been a Reeses Peanut Butter Cup Blizzard.

Re: Protein Supplements
Wife is a personal trainer and she recommends Trutein because you can bake and cook with it and it takes a little less of the powder to make what you want. Myofusion is second for the same reasons but takes a little more powder, and they don't reveal as much of the macro values and info on their labeling. One 5 lb. tub of Trutein lasts almost 2 months for the two of us, and actually is the best tasting I think. We put it in our pancake mix for example to get some lean protein at breakfast without eating a heart screamer like bacon or sausage.
If you can't afford either of those, Whole Foods makes a supplement called 365 that is pretty cheap and has some protein if you are just going to make shakes. You cannot cook with that one.
Hope this helps.
Cheers.

Re: Protein Supplements
I'm in the chocolate milk crowd. Also, a fist full of unsalted or lightly salted almonds can be an easy way to get some protein in you immediately post work out even before you get home and get your glass of milk. And the almonds are low in saturated fats.
I really like white milk better, but for post workout chocolate milk is the better fuel for your body's recovery.

Chocolate milk is more expensive than a tub of whey protein. Especially if you compare grams of protein

Re: Protein Supplements
My trainer and dietitian recommends and I have used for years the Optinum Nutrition Gold. I have gone from 400+ pounds to Ironman, so I think it works. :-)
Personally, maybe you younger guys can handle it, but the processed sugar in chocolate milk, and the increased natural sugar in skim milk is not beneficial to your body.
Of course I follow a somewhat strict diet that has no starch/grains or processed sugars in it at all, with only proteins, fats, vegetables, and some fruit. But I am as focused on fat loss as well as muscle gains.

Just switch your diet to primal! You will get tons of protein and keep the weight off.

Some people are crazy for chocolate milk, and I have tried it, but felt that protein shakes and post workout recovery drinks like Endurox are far better. Digest more quickly and don't have the lactic acid. I have read in the Paleo Diet for Athletes that dairy can increase lactic acid in muscles so I went to almond milk years ago. Maybe one of our Nutritionist majors and Kinesioligy Grads can shed some light on that.
