I'm struggling to think of any band that has done this.
Beck and the Beastie Boys (RIP, Yauch) constantly reinvent themselves. Both have retained a lot of popularity.
We've discussed the first paragraph a bit - I know I would argue that they should just stop, then.

Here's the thing, even if they continue to do one thing, but they continue to do that one thing as well or better than any other band producing music, why should they stop. I think Foo Fighters fits in this argument category.

David Bowie is probably the best example of this; he's a musical chameleon and almost everything he's done had been great.

Well, Nirvana kind of did that. However they are overrated now because they were labeled as iconic because of Kurt.
In reality, they were a very good band and did a lot for the grunge genre. But looking at their body of work now, it's all been overplayed and overhyped. Hurts the integrity of it in my mind.

I don't think the Foo Fighters do rock better than a lot of current acts, though. The Black Keys have one sound, but I think they put a lot more passion into it than the Foo Fighters seem to at this point - and they do the "loud guitar rock" thing harder and better than the Foo have in a long time. JMO, but my mom listening to the Foo Fighters on 102.5 really makes it hard for me to think that they're better at being cutting-edge rock than many other bands. I think it's more accurate (at least in my opinion) to say that the Foo continues to do a good job of making music that will make them money.
ETA - And I love a lot of old Foo Fighters, still listen to it. The new stuff is just okay to me.

Genius comparison. I wasn't even thinking of Bowie.
Re: Most Overrated Bands/Artists?
I don't listen to bands that more than 8 people have heard of. The 9th person always ruins it.

I wasn't trying to make a case for FF as the rockingest band (which sounds super lame, I know). Merely poking holes in your idea that your overrated as soon as you stop evolving.

I was surprised this thread got as far as it did without someone making that argument and being serious.

I've already qualified that before, though - I don't think that necessarily means that you've stopped evolving, either. Just make music that does something new. Don't just keep using the same chords and riffs, the same two stanza verse-chorus-two stanza verse thing. At least play with your own sound.

I don't think I've ever read those three words together before.

I guess I'm just content to let the FF's and Green Day's of the world continue to put out their music because if they don't the Nickelbacks of the world will see the opening for radio listeners that like that genre of music and put out music that is even less creative and more commercially calculated.
