But I don't think you can call bands overrated because the weak albums in their catalog outnumber the strong ones. The doors is a perfect example; I mostly agree with you but in 1966 The Doors was a hugely new and influential record. Also, LA Woman (their swan song) is absolutely brilliant. Anyone who says the Beatles are overrated has no understanding of the impact of Sgt. Pepper in 1967. It's one of my least favorite Beatles records (fav is the White Album) but it's impact is real and lasts to this day. One simply cannot call bands like The Grateful Dead or The Sex Pistols overrated when you can still hear them today in other bands. I hear The Velvet Underground over and over and over again and would call them the most UNDERRATED band I know of.
It's a fun topic but just because a band jumps the shark doesn't mean they were never legit. I still remember when I bought Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger the day it came out. It totally blew me away and obviously a bunch of other people considering how much it got ripped-off. Just because none of their subsequent records were nearly as good doesn't make them overrated imo. It just means they had a peak. Based on your comment, and similar views here, I realize I'm probably better suited to find overrated/underrated albums instead of bands.
When I included Sex Pistols, I probably thought more of overrated nature of "Bollocks," rather than considering impact/influence of the band itself. I don't think the album, purely based on the music, can hold up to the hype. Then again, I haven't heard it in 20 years — maybe if I listened to it now, I'd think it was underrated.

Pink has a classically trained voice and is 50x the vocalist as Britney Spears---who's singing talent absolutely sucks balls.
She can't sing...period. Her voice is synthesized, packaged, etc..... Like Tim McGraw---who hides his TERRIBLE voice with good lyrics, and a great backup band

Weezer (also on my underrated list, strangely)
Simon & Garfunkel
Janis Joplin
Pearl Jam
Jefferson Airplane
I could make a case for The Who and Guns ’n Roses, but it requires more in-depth qualification. Clapton is overrated? In his prime or as an old guy making a special appearance on an awards show? (can definitely see the angle on all the others though)

When the wheels come down,
When the wheels touch ground,
And you feel like it's all over,
there's another round for you,
when the wheels touch down.
No...that's not Creed, it's too pretentious for Nickelback. It could be the latest Christian rock fad, but no, it's the Foo Fighters.
I have no musical talent, but that chorus would never have left the nether regions of mind.
I'll analyze Rope next...it's almost as bad.

These songs are not at all the same. One is about leaving behind a stage or time period in your life, the other is a critique of American culture post-9/11. ...That both are structured similarly and have the same overall sound.

Stopped reading after page 3. I'm sure if I would have made to this current page every major artist / band would be mentioned. Music in general must be overrated.

The Beach Boys. All of their songs sound the same to me
