Most Overrated Bands/Artists?
Today seems to be starting off slow, so to spark discussion: what are the most overrated musical bands/artists of all time?
I think there are a lot to choose from, but my picks would probably be:
The Doors - Like a lot of teenagers, I loved the Doors when I was about 14. Brooding, etc. Then I got older and realized Jim Morrison was kind of pretentious with an inflated sense of his own talent. They've got some music that's stood the test of time... but the bulk of their catalog is just mediocre when compared against other musicians of the time.
Foo Fighters - I know a lot of people disagree with this one. When the Foo first started out, I loved them. I think Dave Grohl is a phenomenal talent, particularly when drumming (obviously Nirvana, Them Crooked Vultures, QOTSA, even with the D). However, I think they've sort of stagnated and sold out as time has gone on. You can pretty much predict that there are going to be several sweeping anthems with emotional undertones on each album, as well as some mildly hard rock that is palatable for the listeners of Star 102.5. When Grohl has his angst, he's great... but it seems to me like the Foo just likes to get paid anymore.
REM - I always loved REM. Our first dance at our wedding was "Strange Currencies." However, they get huge billing as the quintessential college rock band. They just disbanded within the last year or so, but what have they done since Monster that is of note? Much like the Foo, they sort of hit that one note and just kept riding it.
Red Hot Chili Peppers and Green Day - sort of the same thing, they just keep doing the same thing over and over.

I agree with you on Foo Fighters and REM, Angie. Never really cared for either one. Coldplay is another band that I could never get into that everyone seems to love. I'd put U2 up there too. War is an awesome album, but everything after that was just OK.

I don't mind Coldplay, and have really liked individual pieces... but I don't understand how tickets when they were here were, what, $150? It just doesn't make a lot of sense to me, same with U2.

However, I think it can be argued that each of their members (well, sans Ringo) are stronger individual artists than the members of almost any other band ever.

RHCP have changed a lot since the beginning of their career, but I will admit the last 3 cds are pretty much the same.
