I didn't want to write a wall of text, so please forgive me. It isn't Austen's books I was trying to attack. I haven't seen the BBC version with Firth as I have been tainted by 2-3 versions that are just wretched. I may have to give the mini-series a shot. The point of the "Pride and Prejudice" post was to get at the fact that turn of the century films are typically more miss than hit and all usually have hype for reasons unknown.
Pleae forgive my attack on Jane Austen as that was the first of the turn of the century period pieces that came to mind.

I could see hating all of those movies if you were someone who doesn't have the attention span for a long movie.

Pleae forgive my attack on Jane Austen as that was the first of the turn of the century period pieces that came to mind. I'm not offended at all, and hope I didn't offend you, either! I totally see where you're getting what you were saying. I agree, they're not great representations of 19th century England (although the Colin Firth miniseries is better than the movies - partially because they had more time to do it in). I think they do a good job of working the love story... but that only goes so far. Sadly, I think the P&P movies are better with the time period than the Emma version with Gwenyth Paltrow, or the Sense & Sensibility with... crap, what's his name. The guy who cheated on Elizabeth Hurley with Divine Brown. Hugh something.
I didn't see it as an attack at all!
