Most overrated movies?

Hmm... I do agree that Austen's books are held up as examples of the time period, but that wasn't really her original intention. It was simply a love story between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy (with some commentary on crazy families thrown in). I do think that the movies (most of them, anyway, in particular the BBC miniseries w/Colin Firth) do a good job of portraying that.

I haven't seen the BBC version with Firth as I have been tainted by 2-3 versions that are just wretched. I may have to give the mini-series a shot. The point of the "Pride and Prejudice" post was to get at the fact that turn of the century films are typically more miss than hit and all usually have hype for reasons unknown.

Pleae forgive my attack on Jane Austen as that was the first of the turn of the century period pieces that came to mind.

I'm not offended at all, and hope I didn't offend you, either! I totally see where you're getting what you were saying. I agree, they're not great representations of 19th century England (although the Colin Firth miniseries is better than the movies - partially because they had more time to do it in). I think they do a good job of working the love story... but that only goes so far. Sadly, I think the P&P movies are better with the time period than the Emma version with Gwenyth Paltrow, or the Sense & Sensibility with... crap, what's his name. The guy who cheated on Elizabeth Hurley with Divine Brown. Hugh something.

Encino man sucked. Bio-dome is one of my guilty pleasure movies.

You must be ******* high if you think Biodome is better than Encino Man. Weeeez the juice! The cheese is old and moldy, where is the bathroom? The weasel? All classic moments. The only memorable moment Biodome had was them determining what food components made up each others farts.

You take that back!!! Such a classic. A lot of the best stuff in the movie is extremely subtle, but makes it awesome.

I kind of liked it. It was more a case of it always being on lists of best movies of all time, and I had too high of expectations. I thought I would be blown away by it and I wasn't.
