Re: Marriage Question
I dated my wife for eight years before marrying her. Although we did start dating my Freshman year in high school, and dated all the way through high school and college.

Re: Marriage Question
My advice... if you really needed to consult a forum to make up your mind you PROBABLY shouldn't get married.
That being said, dated 1 year, engaged 1.5 years. Please come back when you need advice on what to name your first born.

Re: Marriage Question
Look at it like a car purchase. If you think you like a "car" - but never owned that brand before, why not try out a lease program (live together / date). After 3 years you have a choice to walk away and payments stop, but if you like it for the long haul go ahead and pull the trigger. Just hope you don't buy a lemon though, those can be expensive.
i dated my wife for 2 years and we have been married 7 years now...........best decision i have made so far.
FYI - don't buy a house together until you are married - seen that blow up in too many people's faces.

Re: Marriage Question
We dated 4+ years before I popped the question...lived together for almost 3. Engaged for 1 year.
There is no proper timeline. Make sure you are 100% comfortable and ready to do it. Worst thing you can do is get married when you aren't 100% sure because people/society tell you that its the next step...that typically doesn't end well.

Re: Marriage Question
Met her in the fall of '86. Started dating the fall of '97. Engaged the night before we left for Shreveport in '01. Married June of '03. First daughter in 06. 2nd in 08. 3rd in '11. One may say I moved pretty slowly, but '86 was when I met a cute little girl in kindergarten.

Re: Marriage Question
Met summer 2003, got engaged winter 2007, got married summer 2008.
Her dad asked that I wait until she was out of school to propose so I proposed the night she graduated.

Re: Marriage Question
Were friends for 7 months. Dated for 3 months. Engaged for 5 months (I had one semester left, she had already graduated). Been married now for 3+ years with 2 kids. So it kinda depends on who you are, what your values are, and where you see yourself going. Not sure I'd marry someone because they nagged me into it.

Just do what you're comfortable with, but don't be a wimp either.
Yeah, your poll doesn't include enough options. For us it was 6 years but I was a little gun shy since it was my second go around.

met first year at ISU, wanted to graduate before being married. There was girl in my college class that did the opposite of this. In fact she got married the weekend before finals of her senior year.
Do you know why I put up with this 'pitiful job', Mr. Donaghy, why I fetch these folks' lunches and clean up their barfs? Cause they make television. And more then jazz, or musical theater, or morbid obesity, television is the true American artform. -

We got married when my wife had a year left. I was a grad student so she transitioned to in-state tuition and was awarded full Pell & Science grants. Paid no tuition out of pocket for her last year. ∞
