New Google-Iowa announcement coming Friday
???
Google plans to outline next step for Iowa http://www.desmoinesregister.com/art...nclick_check=1
Gov. Terry Branstad told Google leaders earlier this year that he hoped the tech giant’s $300 million expansion at its Council Bluffs data center would just be the beginning.
A news conference scheduled for Friday afternoon indicates Branstad’s hope could become a reality.
Google says in a release that it’s announcing new details about “its continued investment in Iowa and its Council Bluffs data center” at the Statehouse. No additional information about the announcement was available Wednesday. ...
In April, Google announced it would expand its data center operations in Council Bluffs, where the Mountain View, Calif.-based company has invested $600 million. The existing center opened in 2008. The company’s new expansion, now under way, sits on 1,000 acres just south of its existing data center.
Council Bluffs leaders say they’ve gotten no information from Google about a third data center operation... "Contrary to what many skeptics had earlier believed, the Soviet economy is proof that … a socialist command economy can function and even thrive."

I hope this leads to Google Fiber being available sooner rather than later.

Council Bluffs will be renamed Google Bluffs. And everyone will be okay with it.

I was holding out hope that someday they would rename it "Jedi" Council Bluffs, but due to Western Iowa's recent decrease in midichlorian counts, I'm starting to think that it may never happen. Must be something in the water... or the Sith.

The infrastructure costs wouldn't be recouped nearly as fast in small towns in Iowa as they are in KC. That being said, yes please!

Google Fibre will change the country. If I was Cable Companies, Direct, Dish, Century Link....I would be be very afraid of the loss of business in major cities in the next decade.
Make sure you don't call the charge. But make sure you call the foul on the scrum.... -

I would agree that thats not what this announcement is though, unfortunately.
That said, i bet iowa is high on the list. Some of the infrastructure for google fiber is already based in iowa i believe (the satellite farm for the tv). And its a great market to get into, the smaller areas like iowa are much more underserved than some of the larger areas.

Google would do well to make Iowa a central hub for communication. Decent land, centrally located, educated work force, etc.

Re: New Google-Iowa announcement coming Friday
Expansion of Google Fiber seems a long way out at this point. The first customer installs just started this week in KC, nearly a year behind schedule. They will likely spend 2013 doing work in KCMO and KCK proper, so expansion into the rest of the metro won't even start until 2014.
I would imagine that they will want to get a fairly sizable market build completed so that they can look at the results before they would go down the path of building out Google Fiber service in another city. I would be shocked to even have an announcement of a new market from Google sometime before 2015, let alone actual service.

Im guessing a lot of red tape? I would think after a few large quality installs, they will be able to more a bit more swift since everyone will want in and cities agencies will be more willing to say yes.

In other Council Bluffs news, Iowa Western will play for the national JUCO football championship on Sunday, Dec. 2, in the UNI-Dome. Couple of Cyclone recruits there. Reivers to get shot at national title - SouthwestIowaNews.com: Sports
Top-ranked Iowa Western remained No. 1 in the final national poll of the regular season, which was released Monday afternoon. The Reivers (11-0) will meet No. 2 Butler (11-0) in the Graphic Edge Bowl on Dec. 2 at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls to decide the NJCAA champion...
The Reivers won the JUCO College World Series last summer.

The New York Times had big articles in September about how much energy data centers use: NYTimes.com Search "Contrary to what many skeptics had earlier believed, the Soviet economy is proof that … a socialist command economy can function and even thrive."
