Re: Yellow Jackets - how to kill
I'd probably sleep with the blankets over my head, but that summer was pretty traumatizing, haha. I think I got stung about three times, including one flying directly into my face. Just don't start practicing the drums, and you'll probably be ok.

I've had a couple infestations over the past 5years. I tried several things on my own,but could never get the job fully done myself.
Get a pro - they have access to products the general consumer doesn't.
FYI - my most effective home remedy was using my shop vac. I filled the bottom with some water & a little gas, then fastened the hose right next to the entrance. The could still get in/out, but couldn't escape the suction. I let the vac run for over a day straight and killed thousands of em. The problem is that it doesn't kill the queen, so she just keeps making more and eventually they came back.
Speaking from experience, just bite the bullet & get an exterminator.

Were you trying to go the "Kill them with Fire" route? :wideeyed:
Re: Yellow Jackets - how to kill
Ha - gas kills them as effectively as any spray you can buy. I didn't want to open my shop vac and have a swarm of angry yellow jackets pour
An inch of water with a thin layer of gas on top is amazingly effective in killing them.

Not sure I'd be using gas in my shop vac. Your mileage may vary.

Wouldn't it be better to use diesel?
Re: Yellow Jackets - how to kill
Use a chemical fire extinguisher and use a mask for protection.

this is a bad idea. That is exactly how my brother discovered (or created) the fact that he is allergic to wasps.
And burning down the house for wasps is any better? You get all the wasps - but lose all your possessions in the process (I get this is a jimlad conversation)

But you get to build a new house for free

How many homeonwer's policies do you know of that cover "accidental destructive burning due to wasp genocide"?

Yeah I'm pretty sure diesel is less volatile than gasoline. But I still wouldn't want any vapor inside a non air-tight tank only inches from a running electrical motor. Yikes.
Re: Yellow Jackets - how to kill
I had great luck with gas on barn wasps, but yellow jackets sound like a whole different league. Do we actually have these in Iowa?

Most people I know refer to most wasps as "yellow jackets." Unless it's all black, in which case it gets called a hornet. They all look somewhat similiar, especially during a frantic run into the house. Unlike yellow jackets and hornets, wasps normally have a relatively small number in each colony. Yellow jackets are primarily scavengers, unlike the other 2 which are almost entirely predacious.
The one trait shared by all is a unique immunity to pesticides. The only sure was to remove a nest is with fire, lots and lots of fire.

I thought you were serious about the hose idea. Like I said, my brother thought it was a good one! It may have worked had he had better aim and faster feet. (this one on a little wasp nest up on a barn).
