Re: Most Disappointing Athletic Fail
When I was in 8th grade in track, the coach told me I was going to run the mile. I think the rest of the field was done when I started the last lap. My Dad decided to come to see me run and is walking in when I am on my last lap so I yell out to him and wave. Pretty sure he was more embaressed that I was by far.
About 3 years out of college I got to where I was enjoying playing in BB tournaments. A couple friends and I had won a 3 man tournament and thought we were pretty good. He calls me up and wants to know if I want to go to Fort Dodge and play in a tournament at Iowa Central. I tell him to go ahead figuring we would be competitive at the least. The B league team was filled out so they put us in the A league. We got our butts kicked the first game and was ready to play the second team when I noticed the team. Brian Pearson(RIP) and Troy Skinner were on the team, a current NBA player....Mugsy Bogues I think, and the guy I had to guard. He was UNI's starting MLB and also played MBB for the panthers and I forget his name. Needless to say, we got our butts humbled big time. At one point in the game I take a charge against and felt like I was hit by a Mack truck. As I am laying there getting my bearings back, I hear him say "I bet he won't take a charge on me again" to which everybody laughed. Then I totally missed the free throws and they beat us I think 75-12. And I thought I was good going to that tourny

After running the 110-hurdles with my personal best time and finishing third, I was informed that my time was DQ'd because "I did not make an attempt to clear the hurdles." Granted, my lead or trail leg clipped all but one or two hurdles, but I at least made the sportsmanlike attempt, and my hands never touched any of them.
After the official told me I was DQ'd, I proceeded to rip off my jersey, threw it down, and followed him, going on a tirade for a minute or two, ripping into him while in nothing but track spikes and the teensy track shorts.
Once I had simmered down and was getting my warmups back on, my coach comes up and asked me why I was acting like such an idiot. When I told him the reason, he went off on the official in the same manner that I did!

Tough one. Could be the time I missed the second of a one and one in 8th grade against the worst team in our conference to lose the game and ruin our unbeaten streak of 4 yrs. The entire starting 5, except me, got busted for having a party and was suspended. Or it could be my freshman year when I 4 putted the last hole at state golf to go from a tie to first to a tie for 4th.

Re: Most Disappointing Athletic Fail
My son was running the 3200 his sophomore year. He was 2nd, sitting on the outside shoulder of the guy in 1st, positioning himself to go around him on the last lap. They come around for the gun lap...and they start motioning for the runners to stop as they finish. The first 4 guys were wondering what was going on and told the starter they had just done 7 laps. The starter later realized the error and all the other kids had to run all 8 laps. It cost my son 1st place and one of our team's other runners lost out on a medal because he ran all 8 laps and the kid who "beat" him only ran 7. My son was hoping they would turn the 7 lap time in for Drake -

I can't believe there are no high-jump stories yet... We used to make it a point to watch the prelims of the High Jump because you would always see some crazy ****.

Re: Most Disappointing Athletic Fail
I switched schools after 8th grade football started. The coach didn't know where to put me so he asked me if I could run. What a stupid question; who can't run? What he meant was can you play running back. He tried me out in my first practice but I had never seen the plays and apparently I did okay because he subbed me in at RB at the next B game. For some reason between that practice and that game I didn't take nearly enough time learning the plays. I went in and promptly dived when I should have swept. The QB pitched back to no one in particular but we luckily covered the ball. In the huddle the QB asked me if I knew the play because the ball was going to me again. Well I thought I did. This time the QB had to eat the ball. I came out of the game and never saw the field again.
As a scrub and practice fodder for the rest of the season I occasionally stood in at dback on the practice squad. One day they needed someone to step in at NG for a few snaps. I was tiny but thought I could outquick our huge lumbering center. On the first play he hit me pretty hard but I kept my feet. I razzed him a little asking him if that was all the harder he could hit. He commented that it was pass protection. On the next play he totally trucked me. Not only was I unathletic, but I was dumb.

We all did a couple trips up and down. They decided to get into a few teams a make a relay. It somehow ended up that a bunch of us freshman were anchors. There are about 6 of us freshman 10 feet up off the floor, hugging bleachers, with our shorts around our ankles, all while the entire girls track team is looking on. This could have been a tremendous opportunity to increase your high school street cred if you had the right "set up"

Banned from intramurals my Freshman year, during flag football, used my hands while blocking as an o lineman. Defense bum rushed me , so I picked the kid off the ground and tossed him.
Then I got tossed.

Re: Most Disappointing Athletic Fail
This one wasnt mine, but it was a friend of mine. We were at a track meet at Coe, and he was running the mile. I was waiting for the 2X200, so I was watching and cheering him on. I watched him go around the first couple laps, then I never saw him again. After I was done with my race, I went back to camp and asked him what had happened. He told me he ran off of the track to go to the bathroom because he had the *****. Im pretty sure coach didnt realize it at the time either.
We never let him live that down.

Re: Most Disappointing Athletic Fail
I went to the state track meet in the half mile. I had been battling some sort of respiratory infection for quite a while - it would stick with me for months after state as well. I missed our conference meet because of it. It was so bad that I ended up with a cough drop in my mouth at the starting line so I wouldn't be hacking throughout the race.
I woke up the morning of my race to a huge picture on the front page of the Rag sports section of the race favorite winning his previous day's race in a big way. Just before the race my coach tells me that despite me alway having been a front runner who runs his own race to back off on the first lap and just stick with the field. Stupidly, I did just that and faded as usual on the second lap but this time without a big lead to rely on. I still can't believe he told me to totally change the way I race in the most important race of my life without at least trying it in practice first. Eight guys passed me on the home stretch. Despite qualifying third I finished ninth.
