Learning how to make computer games
I was wondering if anyone knew of a computer program that would be good for my son in teaching him how to code and make games? It doesn't have to be free, just something that will teach him the basics and advance from there. Any help would be appreciated.

This isn't related specifically to games, but the website www.codeacademy.com is a great site to use to first learn coding. All the actual coding is done in the browser so you don't have to worry about the hassle of installing and using a compiler, and the site has lessons which assume you have never coded before. You will have to learn the basics of coding to make games anyway, so I think the site would be helpful.

He's just a natural with the computer, and I'd like to focus his energy on something that could be useful for him later on, but would be fun in the process of learning it.

I'd suggest getting into Flash - when I was younger I bought Flash MX and messed around for a couple years and it was great. Allows for C++/ActionScript and they provide an SDK if you're getting into compiling games for iOS/Android/etc... Fairly commonly used basis and there's a multitude of tutorials and whatnot.

Learning to program is not easy and having a support network as well as something like that site that is very interactive goes a long way to keeping someone engaged.
I would stay away from any "Teach yourself language X in 21 days" books as you are immediately up to your eyes in syntax and vocabulary without an interesting goal kept in mind (like creating a game). A quick jump around Amazon pulled up a few books that might be cool. I've thought about the same thing as I've got a young nephew that's shown interest and will some day want to do the same with my own kids. Invent Your Own Computer Games with Python, 2nd Edition: Al Sweigart: 9780982106013: Amazon.com: Books Amazon.com: Computer Programming for Teens (For Teens (Course Technology)) (9781598634464): Mary E. Re: Learning how to make computer games
as a Comp E who is taking Com S (Java), i recommend Head Start as a reference book.
The best language to start in is Python...though I find Java to be easy and when your kid advances, that's the language I'd have him learn...got some cool games I help made this year but that is kinda advanced. Come here to chew bubble gum and kick ***, have I. And all out of bubble gum, I am. -
