My wife is a Kindergarten teacher. Every year she has 4 or 5 kids whose mother or guardian tells her that if the father shows up, she has to call the police immediately. The police are at the school at least twice a week. I'm 47 and can never remember a time when the police were at my grade school for anything other than a program - EVER.

my cousin worked as at a YMCA daycare/program and she dealt with this often as well. One time I believe she somehow ended up having to try and defuse a situation where the father was trying to take the child and the mom and child were hiding inside the building.

And I agree, if someone wants in badly enough, they'll get in. They'd literally need to make schools like fortresses to keep them safe. Which is terrible.

I've been saying it for years....sooner or later they'll pay attention to security in schools like they do airports. Some day sadly, someone will do something at a ball game and then we'll see security all over those as well.

they didn't make mention of one in the presser - said the situation was secure and the public was not at risk. So either there isn't one or they have him in custody and aren't saying.

I guess we need to have a guard shack in the parking lots. A visitor parks, reports to the guard shack to be searched. Once cleared, they can proceed to the locked front door and another security guard who checks them again and if OK, radios somebody inside to buzz them in.

Then I suppose somebody will drive by in their car at recess time and open up with an AK47.

I don't think I can really put into words how I'm feeling. My heart is breaking for those people. Focusing on work seems so trivial right now.

Just curious, what media are people following to get updates on this? It seems like there's a lot of conflicting information being promulgated.

I watched the live presser through ABC. They had the sheriff and a guy from the Mayor's office talking. I'm going with them over tweets right now.

Yeah...I remember the space shuttle exploding. I remember Columbine. I remember Oklahoma City. 9/11, obviously. Now it's things like this, the "Dark Knight" shooting, etc. Scary world we live in, isn't it?
