20 year old man.

sounds like he was wearing military stuff.

This is beyond horrible. I can't believe someone would be such a coward as to kill innocent, defenseless children. I hope that Hell just added one more soul to torture for all of eternity today.

Did they say Ryan Lanza?
If so, it's good that his Facebook page is a closed one. I'm sure the comments would be pretty eye-opening.

How sick do you have to be to open fire in an Elementary school? As the husband of an Elementary School teacher and a new dad as of December 4th (had not announced this), it hurts to think that this is what our world, what humanity has come to...that the danger of someone walking into a school with a gun and opening fire is not as irrational of a thought as it once was!
Think about the death toll: 27 dead, 18 were children. Columbine numbers don't even compare to this! Unbelievably sickening. Thoughts and prayers to all affected.

Sad thing is that there are more avenues now than ever before for people to live in a fantasy world that they create for themselves. And it appears more and more are deciding to make their fantasies a reality without any thought to innocent people.

I'm not normally necessarily the biggest fan of home-schooling, but things like this make me totally get it. It makes me ill that these parents and children were going to one of the places they thought was safe, until someone stripped that away.

They're going to spend so much time questioning going to work today, where they chose to live, where they sent their children to school, ....................
Oh, it's going to be horrible for them. I'm pretty sure that around 20+ employers have sent e-mails today saying "Stay away as long as you need to." It's a long weekend now, but horrible.

Sounds like the shooter's mother was a teacher at the school. His father has been killed.

NBC now reporting Lanza is 24 years old, and first shot his mother (who worked at the school) at her home.
Edit: Now saying mother was shot at the school. I guess details will be changing for awhile...

And how often do you see somebody escape prison and shoot up an elementary school?

My siblings and I were home schooled, and while things like this weren't even a factor on that decision(this just didn't really happen then)...I know on days like when Columbine happened, they certainly didn't regret it.
Of course - it's not like you can shelter your children forever. I still remember my mom's panicked calls on the days Vtech and NIU happened during college.

Absolutely no indictment on homeschooling, it's just not for us overall - but I get it. I truly get it. I don't understand how people can do things to children... but they do. What can even be the motivation in doing something like this? Is it power? They're 5 and 6 year olds! I just don't understand, can never understand.

Re: Shooting at Newtown, Conn. Elementary School - Gunman Is Dead
I'm thankful to have this forum and you people to discuss things with, particularly something this disturbing.
It would be really hard to have a meaningful discussion person to person (maybe more so as a guy with an aversion to crying in front of others) right now, and I think it really helps to be able to talk about it.
