Bumping this from the Collin Bevins thread. Can't believe Oelwein isn't discussed a little more. That place is weird.
This! I'm shocked nobody has mentioned Oelwein either, that place is easily the most white-trash, meth addled community I've ever been to. I worked in the Oelwein area for two summers, and the amount of people without teeth is astounding.
I don't have much knowledge of Waterloo. However, if I lived in the area you're describing, I would feel pretty bad after reading your derogatory post.
I can't believe how close-minded and judgmental some people on CF are. Those are fellow human beings living in the area you described and "[p]retend [this area] doesn't exist." You, along with a few others in this thread, actually sound more close-minded and biggoted than the people you're making fun of.
You're right. I am absolutely elated that the Bosnian Community exists in those neighborhoods around W 9th and Mitchell. They have done a fabulous job of fixing up some really, really run down properties and the pride they show in their homes is something us Americans could really take note of.
My wife grew up 4 blocks from West High, off of 7th St, and its amazing how much that neighborhood has changed for the worse in the last 10 years. We have a two year old and fully plan on moving to either Cedar Falls or Janesville by the time she is ready to go to school. Her verbal and motor skills are off the charts right now and we just don't want to run the risk of having her in the Waterloo system (even though she would be Orange, Hoover, West).
All-in-all, its not the same city I grew up in and years and years of nothing being done on the north end of town has crept south, just like we all knew it would eventually. If you allow scum to survive in your city, its eventually going to grow and spread...
I went to West. Cedar falls and Hudson have inherited some of the outflight. The excellent road system makes it easy to drive a ways for work. West was built in 1955 and is showing its age.
