Was looking at the Liberty Bowl page and saw this link

sad ordeal, lots of complaining on the page about this. There's a small boycott going on, so I hope it doesn't affect ratings all that much.

Don't think he should be fired, but technically he did break a rule. Don't want this to go to the cave since it has some relevance to the game.

It was sad that he was fired over this and nobody was hurt but this is the type of publicity that will quickly get this guy hired again.

it seems silly that someone would lose their job because they stopped a crime, but really I don't think businesses have much of a choice when it comes to having rules about employees getting involved. There's far too much liability involved.

What happens if, instead of saving the day, the employee gets shot while trying to foil the robbery? Who covers medical bills? What happens if he takes a shot, misses, and hits a bystander? Not worth the risk over what's likely to be a fairly small dollar robbery.

The business has to discourage employees from getting involved. It sucks that this guy lost his job, but from Autozone's standpoint, it was the right call.

I'm sure a lot of businesses have policies about not getting involved in a robbery attempt, I know mine does. It does suck for this guy though.

Janny is 100% right. I admire his courage, but for how much cash is actually in the till it is just not worth the risk.

He did the right thing... and unfortunately there can be negative consequences for doing the right thing.

It was probably for sympathy but I guess when I read it I thought of veteran as an individual qualified to handle a gun in this type of situation.

I think the better question is who would want to rob an Autozone?

Not a knock against Autozone, because rules are rules. But we should all be so lucky to have an employee who doesn't put a price tag on doing right. It seems everyday we are pulverized with stories of workers blubbering about working for a rich man, how they need more time off, more health care, it's not fair, wah...wah...wah. People like him are what make America great. Not politicians, lawyers, focus groups. And I imagine he won't be unemployed for very long.

I agree completely with this, I remember several years back when a Pizza hut delivery driver got robbed in Des Moines for having his firearm on him and stopping a robbery attempt, he was fired as well.

I think I will show autozone the same courtesy that I showed Pizza Hut at that time and just use O'riley's from now on. They do have the right to have that rule in place and a right to act in the manner that they did. But as a consumer I have a right to shop where I want as well.

Last summer a kid that worked at a local mini golf course recognized a guy that was on the most wanted list. The guy was pruning trees around the course. The kid called his dad who is a highway patrolman and a group of 4-5 cops came busting in the doors to arrest the guy. Anyway, the kid got fired for bringing the cops into that type of of area. Same kind of deal, just without any weapons.

So are you going to ask for a copy of corporate policy at each auto parts store and compare it with your personal beliefs before making a purchase? Because I bet most auto parts stores (and gas stations, banks, convenience stores, etc.) have the same policy, whether or not you know about it.

No, I don't think that is the same type of deal as the kid left it up to the authorities to handle instead of taking matters into his own hands.

I wonder if he was given a nice reward which he probably would have quit his job anyway.
