College Majors That Are Most Demanding

At least according to something called the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE).

As an Engineer, I would agree with #1. Don't agree with #4 Arts and Humanities. I would have voted for Business with Accounting and Finance to be in top 4.

I wouldn't agree with education either. I know a handful of education majors that graduated last spring that are struggling to find jobs.

edit: I misunderstood the article. I figured it was about demand for these majors out of college.
“I told you, I don’t care if you’re black or white. I don’t care if you’re rich or poor. I don’t care where you come from, whether it’s Texas, Florida, California, or right here in the state of Iowa, I don’t care about any of that… But what I did care about is moving forward from that day on, that we were one team." -Paul Rhoads

Showing my bias here, but the absence of architecture is glaring.

Which is why you hardly ever see D1 Athletes majoring in Engineering / physical sciences. Instead they get 'clustered' into curriculums like: Liberal Studies, General Studies, etc.

I'd agree with that. I'm not an architecture guy, but I know some who are and their hours are ridiculous. Just to plan devil's advocate, perhaps the article included architecture within engineering (some folks see architecture as being closely-related to engineering...with the ability to make things aesthetically pleasing added into the mix).

In response to the OP regarding arts/humanities, some of those majors require immense time commitments due to practicing and such. Music and theater would have such requirements. Their examples of philosophy and the classics wouldn't seem as likely to have such a time requirement.

If you have 3 tough classes in finance you took about 2 tough classes too many. My finance degree had 1 difficult class (International Finance with Cowan).

Accounting on the other hand....387 sucks, 485 sucks, and there are plenty of others you can take as classes that suck.

Agreed. At first I laughed when I saw arts/humanities but then realized that does include the performing arts. I was friends with a girl in college who was majoring in theater/dance and the hours that she put in was crazy let alone the physical aspect it took on her body. She talked me into taking a dance class with her for part of my gen eds and I walked away with a new respect for how physically demanding dance is at that level. Most are still crazy as all get out however, HOT but crazy.

I agree. I was drunk 6 nights a week and still got a 3.8 GPA with my finance major. I think my minor in Spanish was more difficult than my major.

Have you ever had a major in the LAS college? For example, a lit major will read about six novels a semester, lowballing it, in addition to textbooks, writing long papers, and so on. That's actually very demanding.

    Good point.

Engineering sucks balls though. Every time I had a class that didn't suck, I followed it up with one that was ridiculously horrible. I stuck around way too long. MIS was a way better fit for me and I'm actually using some of what I learned there in my job now. I wish I would have started out there.
