Des Moines once again has 3 sportstalk radio stations....
...kinda.
1700am The Champ is now CBS Sport Radio and ESPN moved to 1490am. Tried listening to 1490 a couple times yesterday in different parts of metro and the signal was horrible. Too bad because I enjoyed MIke and Mike when T & T are on a topic I'm not interested in.
1460 KXnO, of course, is the third and the only one that has a decent signal strength (at least where I seem to drive).
sidenote: Glad to hear Jay Mohr take Rome's spot on KXNO. I don't mind Rome, but always enjoyed Mohr when he sat in for Rome in the past. Rome moved to 1700 (since he moved from Fox to CBS), but locally we only get the last hour due to Out of Bounds.
1700 is doing John Feinstein's new (I assume?) national show during am drive. Not bad from what I've heard so far.

It's like they took ESPN First Take (back when it was known as Cold Pizza) and just decided to do it on the radio. Bleh.

Want Mike & Mike listen to 590AM out of Omaha in the morning, pretty good signal throughout town.
Cyclone
Iowa State became the Cyclones after they leveled Northwestern in 1895. As the Chicago Tribune (9/29/1895) noted:

It Comes from Iowa and Devastates Evanston Town' -

oh...BTW, Marty is now on the newer station - 1490 - at his usual time.

Re: Des Moines once again has 3 sportstalk radio stations....
I will have to hit 1490. I miss Mike and Mike. I also miss Hill and Schlereth.

Mike & Mike on 590AM in the morning! I was really missing them until I found this. After work, just bounce around until I find one actually talking sports. -
Re: Des Moines once again has 3 sportstalk radio stations....
Why move ESPN for CBS? I can see putting it on a stronger station, but a weaker one, really. Yes DSM has 3 sports stations but all three of have very weak signals.

I like the sports shows on the ISU campus radio station, they usually have a couple during the school year. Pretty much all Cyclone talk all the time and they are better than some of the blowhards on KXNO like Miller & Brinson

I listen to Mike & Mike and Colin using the ESPN radio app on my phone. And if I'm busy in the morning I can download the Best of Mike & Mike around 11, using the app.

The Champ is owned by Cumulus Broadcasting, which is the distributor of CBS Radio. They were essentially forced to switch.
Marty has affiliations with Yahoo Sports Radio, which is a separate competitor and my have been the reason he obligated to move down the dial.

Re: Des Moines once again has 3 sportstalk radio stations....
All Cumulus sports stations nationwide made the switch to CBS Sports on January 2, local management at 1700 had their hands tiedd with the move.
Interesting that Marty comes full circle back to 1490 as that's were he and Ken Miller started the orginial Jock in the mid 90's. It will be interesting to see if Marty will be able to get a low power FM repeater for 1490 or even getting changes on 1490 to move closer to Des Moines, which is RARE on the AM band.

It's not great but it's another alternative to the embarrassment to Des Moines that is T&T.
