Car Heater Question

I drive a 2004 Toyota Camry, and I just noticed that when I am stopped/idling that the heater is blowing cold air but when I start driving again it blows hot air as it should. I'm not sure how long this has been going on because I don't sit around idling very often. Any ideas? Thanks

Check the level of antifreeze in your radiator first thing. It might be low enough that it isn't pumped through your heater core. I would bet that is your issue.

P.S. - check it by looking at your overflow tank to make sure it is up to the cold level if antifreeze is cold and up to the hot line if the antifreeze is hot. DO NOT take the radiator cap off when you have a car that is hot(not stolen).

If that is fine then I would guess it would be either your thermostat stuck open or water pump starting to go bad.

Check your coolant level. I've heard of that happening when coolant gets low or sometimes if it has air bubbles in it.

Thanks guys. ^This is what I'm finding too so I will start with the coolant and see what happens.

My guess would be this if your coolant level comes out ok.

I would bet it is the coolant level, a bad thermostat probably would not give you heat when you started moving again. It could also be that your heater core is corroded.

I agree that the problem is probably low coolant level. If you've never had the cooling system serviced it may not be a bad sign. If you have recently though you may have something serious going on.

Along those lines, I have actually gotten a couple of girls to believe me that they needed to check their "blinker fluid" on a regular basis otherwise their turn signals won't work.
