What are the worst sports cliches?
So-and-so is a special player.
"They outplayed us."
Anything blue collar.
We just wanted it more. I hate that cliche
"Out-coached"
"Out-executed"
"Plays the game the right way"
"Gritty"
"Clutch"
I also distaste mixing sports metaphors.
Example 1: In a football game, when the QB chucks it deep, the announcer says, "They go for the home run!" No, they're going for a touchdown. It's not baseball.
Example 2: In a baseball game, when the CF makes a nice catch, the announcer says, "He's playing safety back there." No, he's playing center field.
"Gave 110% percent."
No, they didn't.
Anything Brent Musburger says.
"shocks the world"
"nobody gave us a chance"
"We're taking it one game at a time" - so overused. everyone looks ahead, just some get caught doing it.
"He gave 110 percent" - impossible. dumb.
"They just wanted it more" - all it takes to win now is more desire than the other team has.
"They just know how to win" - scoring more points than the other team? omg! I figured it out, now I know how to win!
"We just beat ourselves out there"
I have never enjoyed anything said by any sports announcer ever, I feel like I just tolerate it. Anyone else?
Use of the word resiliency.
"This team showed so much resiliency".
Really? I think that team actually showed so much RESILIENCE.
They just made more plays than we did.
