Re: X Games Athlete Dies
The OP is worse than the X games, I didn't think that would be possible to say. Sucks for the guy that died but their are risks in anything like this.

Re: X Games Athlete Dies

Re: X Games Athlete Dies
I was watching this live and am very shocked to hear he passed away.
Just crazy how he walked off under his own power and just had a concussion, but then a few days later he dies. What a tragic event.

I bet you only participated during parachute day. Pulling every trick out of your fake bat utility belt. -

It's not like he was an amateur attempting his first back flip ever on a snowmobile. Doing back flips on those are about as common these days as a snowboarder doing a 720. He knew what he was getting into and the risk involved, but it's not like they expect to die every time they go out there.
It's not like he was a base jumper in a bat suit, flying 100mph, skimming the ground at 15 feet and then hit a tree. That would be an unsurprising death.

Really that isn't too bad. The best information I can get is that RAGBRAI has had 26 deaths over the years. That's an event that only lasts one week and only has had less than 20,000 riders at its peak (quite a few less than that for a good portion of its history). That is better than .5 deaths per year. Considering the participation numbers in football at all levels, 4 deaths is pretty damn good in comparison.
EDIT: check that - as of 2010 the RAG reported that 28 people had died on the ride.

"There are five real good recruits in the state. We got three of them. One couldn’t get into school, and the other went to (the University of) Iowa...which is about the same thing." - Coach Johnny Orr -
