I'm giving up chocolate and emaw.com. One of those will be harder than the other.

I always find this time of year pretty funny, to be honest. I'll admit I'm not very educated on Catholic traditions & what not, so maybe some of you can help explain them. For instance, is more importance put on certain ones? I know quite a few people who give up something for lent & go to church on days like today, Easter, & Christmas. Are these things "more important" than things like going to church the rest of the year, tithing, sex before marriage, & birth control?
I'm not saying all Catholics are like this, but it just seems like many only do the things that are more widely publicized / more convenient. I'd say they're pretty much all the same importance. One exception might be holy days of obligation are more important than other days

I'm not saying all Catholics are like this, but it just seems like many only do the things that are more widely publicized / more convenient. Easter is the holiest day of the year. Not even sure Christmas would be 2nd. I've never seen a "weighting" but I'd say every Sunday is pretty much equal.
A priest told me once that faith isn't about perfection or we'd all fail. It's about getting better, closer to God. That's what Lenten sacrifices are all about: Ideally you give up something that would make bring you closer to God. My giving up chocolate won't do that, but every time I don't have chocolate will be an opportunity to reflect. What I should do is give away the $ I would have spent on chocolate.
Hope that helps.

I'm not saying all Catholics are like this, but it just seems like many only do the things that are more widely publicized / more convenient. These people are called CE Catholics. They feel bad that they don't go to church every sunday, but figure if they go on Christmas and Easter plus don't eat meat on fridays during lent God will let them in heaven.
