The switch to directv has made me turn to other areas for my news. The stations don't come in when I would normally watch the weather anyway. Before the switch I used to watch KCRG all the time.

Quite the competition over there. KGAN or KCRG?

His GFS models are 120 hours (5 days) out, and his NAM models are 84 hours (3.5 days) out.

The guy who told me the SEZ project was a go told me this system will miss Iowa.

Take it for what its worth.

LOL...yeah...local TV can be entertaining for who they hire...not how good they do their jobs. Beth Malicki (KCRG) is easy to watch (very pretty)...and I do enjoy the KCRG weather team...other than that...KWWL is the best "news" program in eastern Iowa.

Really? I have never heard anyone say they liked KWWL. I think of it as the 'ghetto' news station. I suppose I'd like it if I lived in Waterloo.

Since they don't originate from CR and don't solely focus on CR most in CR won't watch it. But Ron Steele is a great reporter and has been there forever. They seem to have a serious "buy-in" to the state and are very loyal to their employees. They also focus a bit more on news rather than glamor stories. It will be interesting to see how that station transitions when Ron Steele retires. The guy just loves Eastern Iowa (I am speaking of the region, not the school).

The GFS actually goes out 16 days (384 hours) so there are a couple other places you can grab model predictions past that.

Here is one site, although it is not put into nice maps like the Earl Barker site:
Bufkit and Cobb Precipitation Type Data Available from NWS Des Moines

If you scroll down on that page you will find two tables. "Cobb Precipitation Type (ver 5.7) Output (NAM)" and one below that for GFS.

For Des Moines click on "KDSM" in the current run column. Again, this will be uglier than what you see on the Earl pages, but it will take you out 180 hours.

"TotSN" column is the one you want to track.

Also, instead of KDSM you can select a few other sites, or click "-1" "-2" etc to look back at previous runs of the GFS model to see how consistent it has been.

I am completely biased since I used to intern at KCRG but to think KCRG is anything but the best in that market is stuoid. KWWL is great as well...then there is KGAN.

I probably overstated, but during the 'blizzard' in December they kept on insisting that we were going to get 8 more inches of snow or something like that when the radar clearly showed that the snow was ending. It just made me feel like they were more interested in the hype than being accurate.

    Too early!

I'll give an off the record early prediction after the noon show, by about 2. That way I can see the 12z GFS and 12z Euro.
