How awesome was late 90's, early 2000's rap music?

Been a little bored with my country tunes as of late so last week, I put "DMX" into Pandora. I've been listening to this station nonstop for the last 5 days or so and man, it has taken me back to a finer place.

How awesome was rap back in the 90's? Seriously folks, they just don't make it like that anymore.

When DMX, Eminem, Jay-Z, etc. were in their prime, it was SO MUCH BETTER than the crap out there today.

Anybody agree? Kids - do I sound like a crotchety old man?

Am I going to get banned for saying "not very awesome at all"?

Outkast, Dr. Dre, Snoop, and Nelly agree. I don't know how these kids are able to go to house parties, drink beer, and listen to this trash. I wouldn't last a day in college now.

You need to take it farther back than that even. How about Run DMC, Ice Cube, Too Short, KRS1, Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, and D.O.C. Those boys you mentioned were becoming commercialized around then. Not my old school lyrical artists.

28, so this stuff was all the rage when I was in HS. I agree that it's better than the auto-tuned junk out there today, but I've just never been a big fan of the genre in general.

Dre 2000 was pretty good, I guess, and I do like the Beastie Boys.

TRASH. That's the perfect word to describe the crap out there today.

Kool Moe Dee. The Beastie Boys got an "A" from him for sticking to themes.

Re: How awesome was late 90's, early 2000's rap music?

Rap music has amazing correlation to NBA basketball. The 80's fellas were like Dominique Wilkins...the talent was there, but the product was not quite polished. Late 90's were like MJ...the pieces came together, raw talent with some commercialization, but the product was at its absolute peak. No contest.

The new school rap guys (Kanye, Drake, Wayne) are like LeBron and Durant...ultra talented, but a little too concerned with brand. I don't see DMX or Tupac singing a remix with Katy Perry.

Re: How awesome was late 90's, early 2000's rap music?

90s early 2000s are great. But they have a way different sound then hip hop and rap thats out now. I enjoy both just depenss on the mood. Early 2000s eminem, 50 cent, ludacris, among others was my jams back then when I didnt know what the lyrics meant but still memerized every word. That got me into trouble with mom and dad a few times which always ended with me sitting in timeout and a bar of soap in my mouth
