ok, so then back to Hoth, if the Emperor knew it was Vader's kid on Hoth, and he'd decided to turn him to the dark side, and the Emperor is the Emperor of the Empire, then why would he charge them with bringing down the shield generator and destroying the rebel base? That doesn't make any sense.

So the Emperor's thinking is flawed...how again does this make Vader a "bad" villain?

Vader knows Luke is his son at that point. I read a book told from Vaders POV in which he thinks about getting Luke on his side to help him overthrow the Emperor. He may have been acting on his own going down to the base to get Luke.

I'll go along with this. He's the real badass--the puppet master behind the scenes using Vader as his muscle.

because Vader went right along with it, and if it hadn't taken the ATAT's so long to destroy the generator, Vader never would have been able to get into the base because it would have been bombed to smithereens. Remember, by the time the stormtroopers got into the base, most of the rebels weren't even there, save Han, Leia, et al.

How do you know it wasn't coordinated that way? Maybe the objective all along was to distract the Rebels with the ATAT and ATST walkers so that Vader could slip in and capture Luke before turning the Rebel base into toast? That plan may have worked brilliantly if Han and Chewbacca hadn't been tipped off by finding the probe droid.
