Besides, the Empire's whole plan was botched from the beginning (through no fault of Vader's) when one of the Admirals took the fleet out of hyperspace too early and ruined the surprise attack. Part of the reason Vader had to enter the base himself was to stop the Rebels from fleeing because the sneak attack was compromised.
I still don't see how any of this reflects poorly on the awesomeness of Vader. You've yet to convince me. If anything, it shows that he can take evasive action and make the best out of a situation that was screwed up by some Imperial commanders.

He ran straight into a mostly empty base, where he knew his intended capture target would not be and promptly let all of the other high value targets get away. What did Vader accomplish during Hoth? This supposed ultimate villain spent the first half of the trilogy coming up a day late and a dollar short. Missed the droids on the princess's ship. Was in close proximity to his own daughter for a great deal of time, and doesn't even pick up a whiff of her with his force sniffer. Farks up the Death Star trench battle, and flubs Hoth.
I'll give him the fact that he looks/sounds intimidating, but until the lightsaber battle on Bespin, Vader shows us very little of his ability other than a real knack for choking subordinates.

I'll give him the fact that he looks/sounds intimidating, but until the lightsaber battle on Bespin, Vader shows us very little of his ability other than a real knack for choking subordinates. He nearly captured Han Solo, neutralized the Rebel base, and sent the Rebellion scurrying across the galaxy despite the Imperial commanders doing their best to jeopardize the whole thing. Lest you forget, Vader was the one who insisted in the first place that the structure located by the droid was the Rebel base; the Imperial commanders assumed it to be a pirate base and not worth their efforts. And again, it was a rational assumption on Vader's part to think that Luke would be in the Rebel base (where all of the other high value targets were).
Your whole argument reeks of "well, I could have done that better" armchair quarterbacking. Besides, how many good vs. evil stories involve evil winning without any missteps? To fault Vader for what you singularly perceive to be some minor missteps during the Battle of Hoth is just silly. The guy was the chosen one, foretold to restore order to the Force...instead, he was corrupted and became the fallen angel. He wielded incredible power and used it for purely sinister means. He struck fear into nearly everyone he came into contact with. How is that not a good villain?
