My wife recently got a job in Ames and we decided to buy a house (in Ames). We need to get home owners insurance as part of our loan application process. We are fairly new to all of this and I thought it might be helpful to get some opinions from people who have been through it all before. Basically we are just wanting to get some recommendations for what agents are the best in the area to work with.

I'd team up with whoever does your car insurance et al. Usually there is discounts when you bundle multiple things together.
If your current insurer doesn't seem like the best choice... shop around.

I'f get a couple quotes too. To save some costs, make sure the value only covers the replacement cost of the house (not house and land). Some insurance companies try to include both and some lenders try to make you have coverage for both, but you can push back.....it worked for me, anyway.
On another note, isn't there an agent who advertises (sponsors) on CF. If he offers home owners, might as well get a quote from him.
you can also get insurance coverage if your sump pump goes bad and your basement floods.
Noticed this option when we were filling information out online for a quote, it was fairly expensive, but maybe it would be worth it depending on what we have in the basement.
Mark Doyle with State Farm has been pretty great for me. Not necessarily the cheapest but when it comes to insurance cheapest doesn't always equal the best. He has an office up in Somerset. They also hold a free BBQ/tailgate for all of their clients before every ISU home football game. Not a bad perk.
Mike Banks...he owns an American Family agency in Waukee. Former ISU tight end, great guy and the rates he offered were very competitive. American Family is a really good company and they offer pretty nice multi policy discounts.
