I service alot of laptops. I would hate to build one. Just tearing one down to parts and putting it back together again sucks. I would stick with a pc build. -

Okay this is completely not Christmas related, but it works.
I'm a drafter/designer for a remolding firm. AutoCAD, Revit, 3D animation. What would you recommend regarding tower units to build?

You can choose the case. You want a window, certain color, certain size, etc
You decide what software to load. Companies like Dell install a ton of crapware on your PC. Nothing against Dell I have a $400 laptop from them.
You can get top notch components. For example, with this last PC I built I wanted something silent. So I got a fanless video card, large fans, quiet case with hard drives that hang on suspended rubber bands, etc.
Very easy to upgrade compared to a normal PC. The Antec case I have allows you to have probably 5 hard drives.
You'll get a motherboard that will allow you to do a ton of things that a normal motherboard won't
Faster
If you're not wanting to play games you can build one hell of a PC for $600.
That's very true. I've built probably 30 computers and it was far cheaper to do back in the 90's. Pretty much about the time Dell came around strong, the tide changed. It used to be about 30% cheaper to build, and you'd get better components but now it's actually a tad cheaper to buy a Dell if you use one of the big coupons A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player. -

Re: Rumor - All Of CompUSA Going Out Of Business
If you do a lot of CAD and stuff, memory and graphics cards are the biggest areas to be concerned. The Core 2 Duo's are the best option for budget/performance but the new quad cores kill for pure performance. There are hundreds of motherboards and processor models to choose from and it's hard to just give a random list because there are a few different specs to keep in mind like chipset and things like that to make sure they all work together seemlessly.

I've built dozens of computers over the years. To be honest, I mostly just recommend that people buy them from Dell or wherever these days. Back in the day when a computer was a major investment, on par with buying a car, it was a little different world. These days, any computer is fine for most people's needs, so long as it's clean (i.e. spyware free). That includes the 300 dollar special at Dell. Dell also has decent support if something breaks.
If you're going to be doing HEAVY CAD work, you'll want to step up to a workstation class computer. If you're just doing floor plans, light drafting and whatnot, it doesn't really matter, so long as you go up to the midrange type machines. Don't skimp on RAM, and stay the hell away from Vista, and you'll be fine.

Yes stay away from Vista unless you feel like being a beta tester for Microsoft. Just the general rule of thumb for most things from MS is wait until the product has been out awhile so they can patch the gaping holes in it.
Yeah I've helped my dad build a few computers and he's commented on the same trend, that building your own computer reall doesnt save you much anymore. The benefit however is that your able to build towards what you need/want in a computer.

The rumor has been confirmed that CompUSA is closing.

I've been on vista since its beta days, and its beta was more stable than XP. Some people have had problems upgrading, but on a new pc, with good components, it shouldnt have issues.

Same here. Vista 6 months, no problem.
