Worst thing you've ever found in your fridge...
So I'm cleaning out my fridge before going home for break, and I was reminded of why I don't like looking past the first row of things in there. I'm reminded of old Garfield comic strips where the food inside the fridge has molded so badly that it takes on a life of it's own.
My favorite tonight only had one new color and has only been in there for 2 or 3 weeks... but apprently the lid wasn't shut tight. I had 1/2 of a Green Pepper that had begun to liquify... into a yellowish-white liquid. Fortuantly it's strong smell still partially reminded me of a green pepper - that was a disaster waiting to happen though.
To go with the green pepper tonight we have (all dates refered to are experation dates) year old parmasion cheese, 5 month and 2 month past due yogurt, a year and a half old thing of tortillas (probally still edible actually...) and some green beans that were turning brown.
Past favorites: I forget what it was but it had atleast 3 different molds growiing on it, based on the fact that there were 3 different colors in it...
The one that still gives me nightmares comes from 4 years ago though... when as a freshman I made Macaroni and Cheese, the put the left overs in a bowl. After not eatting it for a week or two I knew it was no good any more, but I couldn't see anything molding so I didn't bother to clean it out. A few months went by, it hid in the back of my fridge until one fateful day I decided it was time to clean it out (I think was near moveout time). I almost threw out my nice bowl when I opened it... the Macaroni inside was no longer yellow or white... but it was a sickly, translucent gray. It had the look of something dead and decaying and ghastly. It's a miracle that I can still eat Macaroni today after seeing that...
Don't get me wrong, I don't usually leave food in my fridge so long it turns colors but on occasion, there is that one bowl of something that does get shoved into the back and forgotten about for a little too long... and I know it happens to others.
So lets hear your horror story! :wideeyed:
Re: Worst thing you've ever found in your fridge...
i know what the most annoying thing i've ever found in there....the television remote after searching for a half hour for it, giving up, and watching another 3 or 4 hours of tv without it before i went back to the fridge. dangit. must have switched it for a pop or some leftovers when i went to get a snack.....

An open 44-ounce can of pineapple juice. Roommate bought it at some point. Got pushed to the back of the fridge, and forgotten. Roommate moved out, didn't clean fridge. I start cleaning fridge. Can gets bumped and tips over. BLACK liquid pours out. Freakin' BLACK. This was originally pineapple juice, mind you.

I lived in the late 70's on Ontario across from Sawyer school in Ames. There are several 4-plexes there and they were brand new at the time. One day, it was toward the end of the school year, I saw a guy I had met (who sold real estate in Ames) at the building across the driveway and he was going in and out of one of the apartments. He would come outside and wait a minute and go back in and then a little bit later he would repeat this process. So I went to see what was going on and he showed me that when these tennants left, the power was turned off, and there was a whole bunch of hamburger and a whole chicken left in the fridge and the DOOR WAS LEFT OPEN!!
The smell was horrible but the view was worse, the meat was covered with maggots.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner

Is your realtor friend a big wrestling fan that sits in front row?
Re: Worst thing you've ever found in your fridge...
I once found a bird's nest in my fridge. My older brother found it on the side of the road and figured it fell out of a tree. He thought that he needed to keep it cool in order to protect the 3 eggs that were in it. So, I come home one day, open the fridge and blammo a bird's nest with 2 unbroken eggs and 1 broken in it was right there next to the butter. It was the most gross then ever! About 3 days later I went back to said fridge and took a big drink out of a gallon of milk. Along with the milk came a baby bird that had broken out of it's shell and someone drowned in the milk jug. It wasn't nearly as gross as just seeing that nest though.
Re: Worst thing you've ever found in your fridge...
When I was in junior high, my brother and I thought we'd be really nice to my parents and clean out the fridge. After nearly an hour of scrubbing every nook and crany, and sorting through all of the old left-overs (some of which would probably make the list of worst things found in a fridge) I pulled out this tupperware bowl that was sitting in the back of the fridge. We opened it out to see what was in it, and didn't even get to see inside before the stench hit us. Leftover fish - probably 3-6 months old. The entire house started to smell, and it was winter so opening the back door only made it cold and stinky. My mom came home about 5 minutes after this happened and was so ticked off about the smell she never once said thanks for cleaning out the rest of the fridge. I think the smell lasted 2-3 hours before it finally disapated.
