DVD Ripper Freeware??

I have a new PC now but prior to getting this, I had a freeware program called DVD decrypter. I used it to "back up" my DVDs to my PC. It looks like that website is gone due to legal action. Is there something newer and better to replace it or should I just try to find whatever the last version of Decrypter was? Any suggestions?

Yeah, I know. But is there something newer and better? I think the last version of Decrypter that came out was 2005. If it is still the best option, I'll go find it.

There is a software I use called DVD Shrink that works pretty good. It will make a copy to your hard drive (and will burn it to a DVD-R if you want). It compresses it down to the 4.7 gig size of the DVD-R's. Works pretty good. It's free, works great for making backup copies of DVD's you have purchased.

It isn't lightening fast by any means, but I suppose it just depends on your PC.

Much of the problem of backing up DVDs is the copyright. Especially in the newer DVDs, this is tough (I have not found a way) to get around.

I too would like to create a back-up of the DVDs we have so we can play them from a server eventually (that would be connected to most all TVs in the house).

I finally forked over the money and bought AnyDVD. It's worked on everything I've thrown at it, and it gets updated alot.

I just want to be able to make a copy that the kids can play with, I get sick of replacing disney dvd's because they are all scratched up.

I didn't think Shrink decoded DVDs though. I thought it just made a 8 gig DVD fit on a 4.7 gig.

I have DVD shrink already. I just didn't think it ripped as well.

Dvd shrink doesnt burn, you need Nero or something to go with it.

You will need to get two programs to do this. E-mail me and I will let you know. It does it all in a few simple, idiot proof steps. DVD shrink compromises quality. I ran DVD shrink and it is great if you want to lose about 20% of the quality. Dvd Decrypter is not the best to go, but if you do not care what happens (some play some won't) then go with that. Burner wise, Get Nero 9

Using DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink together worked out for everything I tried on it, but that was last year before I switched platforms. I never had a problem with lost quality...not sure if you're 20% is anything but an subjective estimation based upon knowing it was compressed. At 55% compression I never had one comment about questionable quality. But people will believe what they want. I've heard good things about anyDVD as well, but that's a decent first investment to be sure.

If you cut out the foriegn audio and extras, you can keep the quality pretty high using Shrink, in my experience.

I know there are some mods that are sticklers about this, but I believe copying DVDs is technically illegal, and therefore shouldn't be discussed on this fine message board. That's why you can't go out there and download DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter anymore. There are some newer, better programs out there that I may or may not have used with great success, but I'm not sure this message board is the best place to be doing that. Peace to you all.
