Re: How Much Can You Spend Without Your Spouse's Permission?

Besides, what is there to complain about when your wife keeps you well stocked with toys anyway (she said yes to the XBOX 360, the new computer, she's agreed to let me get my HDTV in a month...)?
Chuck Lidell: I paint my toenails with pink and black polish. Problem is, I get more paint on my toes and on the carpet than on my nails. Any advice?
Maria Sharapova: Don't you beat up other guys for a living? I don't know how to answer this.

I'm allowed to pay the bills without her consent, but that's about it.

Re: How Much Can You Spend Without Your Spouse's Permission?

I just spent a pretty big bundle on a new lens and I definitely told my wife ahead of time and told her why I wanted it. She rolled her eyes at me but didn't complain because she knows it's not just a whim but that I'll hopefully make good use out of it.
I would not have gotten it if she had objected so I guess I'm whipped!

Me too. My parents are weird about money. What my dad makes is their money and what my mom makes is her money. It really irritated me. I always thought when you are married you share.

Not really since it goes both ways. My wife and I have an agreement that if something is $100 or more, we should talk to each other. This keeps me from buying more crap for my car and keeps her from coming home with $150 black shoes that look like all her other black shoes.

The concept of seperate bank accounts just screams to me that you don't trust each with money. It also complicates the whole who pays for what thing. Dinners, bills, vacations, things for the house, etc.

Just put your money together and act like a married couple I say. What are you scared of?

Depends. If it's a car issue, she'll trust me to get the best deal. Otherwise, probably not over a couple hundred.

True. And if you pool your savings, you get more money off interest.

I'm not talking about keeping in one bank. I'm talking about not having joint accounts. Having checking/savings accounts still set up individualy rather than as a couple....it's silly if you are married IMO.

As far as not sharing, it works for them which is more than some can say that share.

    Who are we to judge?

We have an agreement that anything that is over $100 is discussed but we usually discuss everything anyway.

It doesnt work for them. My mother is irresponsible. She spends her entire paycheck and then spends on what he brings in as well. She doesnt do the check book so she feels its bottomless. My dad gets upset, but he doesnt do anything about it. This is all kind of unrelated to the main topic at this point, but I look at it as though if you share an account its easier to track where money goes and you work together as a couple.
