I agree. Throw a surprise party. My wife loved her's. The trick is keeping it a surprise.

For my wife's 30th, I called in her best friend and got them both a day at a spa (facials, swedish massage, pedicure, manicure) along with a full makeover (hairstyle, new outfit, makeup).
Let them get pampered all day and then picked them up for a night on the town. They were both feeling pretty good about themselves with the day of pampering and made for a great evening celebration.
