teach yourself to play guitar
I recently purchased an ibanez electric guitar, and I have taught myself a few chords and riffs. I was wondering if anyone knew of any really cheap/free ways to teach yourself guitar. Any help would be greatly appreciated. -
Re: teach yourself to play guitar
I know my dad was teaching himself. He bought those instructional workbooks and they seemed to work pretty well. I'm sure there might be youtube videos or online tutorials somewhere too.

Ask Jon D Miller, he's pretty good!

Re: teach yourself to play guitar
There are tons of websites online with free lessons/tab.
My advice, find someone who plays and jam with them from time to time. Only way to pick up real playing tips and tricks and help you maintain your motivation to learn.

Re: teach yourself to play guitar
Once you figure out how to read tablature (its not hard), there are numerous sites that have songs tabbed...its a good way to get started. Be patient and enjoy it!!
Just do a search for "Band X" tabs. I use one called 911 tabs. Some have been shut down for copyright reasons but there are still many out there.

I wanted to get Ripvdub lessons. Anyone know anyone in the Ankeny area that does lessons?

Re: teach yourself to play guitar
I took some lessons at the Ankeny Music Center (by Target). It wasn't bad, but it's hard to really learn with 30 minute lessons. Once you get going it's over...

I tried to teach myself, but my hands are too small.

I'm guessing there are some free ones on YouTube somewhere if you search for them. Seems like people are always posting instructional videos on there for about anything.

Re: teach yourself to play guitar
ULTIMATE GUITAR TABS ARCHIVE | 250,000+ Guitar Tabs, Bass Tabs, Chords and Guitar Pro Tabs! is the best site for tabs. its what i use whenever i need a tab. theres a great program out there that will help teach you how to play. but first you must know how to read tab (which is really easy) and know how to tune your guitar (so some type of electronic tuner would help) but the program is called guitar pro. you can download it free from P2P share programs, or you can go out and buy it.
There are not many crowds or places in the country that have a better impact on the game than at Iowa State. The Cyclone fans are truly a sixth man. The place is so loud and always a fantastic crowd." - Former Kansas and current North Carolina head coach Roy Williams
