How much might I be expecting to spend to sod a half acre? I don't know if there is a huge variance as far as types of grass go, but I would definitely go on the lower end to get something down and then probably overseed later on.

I would expect to pay about $15/square of sod if you buy it yourself and lay it. A square is 10' by 10'. If your doing 1/2 acre that would be 21,752 square ft divided by 100 sq ft in a square so you would need 217.5 squares.
217.5 x $15/square would be $3,262 and change. That is if prices stayed the same as when I was checking last year.
I sodded a little under a 1/2 an acre last fall for around $4,000 installed. If you have never layed sod before it is probably one of the most back breaking things you could attempt.
I should know the variety they used but around central Iowa it probably came from Shattuck Turf.
I know some installers if you need more info just send me a PM.
I've worked at some golf courses and done some sodding in the past so I would probably do it on my own. I may not end up sodding everything, just the front and the first few yards in the back. Besides, a 2 year old can't get too far anyway, right?
If you got that much sod I would assume you could get it for somewhere between $12-$15 a square from Shattuck Farms.
Kentucky Bluegrass is probably what your choice would be as far as the best. It is slow growing so it can suck to seed it but if your buying established grass to sod, you can't beat it. Durable grass
