Dell or Toshiba
I am in the process of buying a laptop for only home use. I am looking in the $500 to $600 dollar range. What laptop would you recommend, and why ?
Thanks in the advance for the advice. -
Re: Dell or Toshiba
I am on a lattitude D630 now. We buy them for our standard laptop at work. I really like it. And they are only like $800. I am sure you can get them for less now. And since I am in charge of purchasing, I could buy anyhting I want, and I still choose this one.

Re: Dell or Toshiba
It definitely depends. I have an HP that has been pretty good to me so far. I think I would pick a Dell over a Toshiba, mainly because Dell's will be cheaper.

Dell. They have so many sales running all the time you can get great stuff for a steal. I would say get a Mac but that would be off topic. -

Dell - their customer service is way better than any consumer store laptops - reason A, 1, whatever to get Dell - it comes with one year, 3 year is cheap, and you can spill a coke on it and they'll replace it if under warranty. They're fast on delivery and they're pretty customizable compared to buying in a store. I've had/have two laptops and a desktop and all are wonderful.

Dell XPS M140....Love it. Decision was easy for me. We get a pretty good corporate discount.

I think you would be happy with either IMO.

Re: Dell or Toshiba
I have a Toshiba and I have had a couple of problems:
LCD screen failed. Changed myself but was $200.
DC jack did not work after about 18 months unless you moved the cord around. Just pulled out the motherboard and re-soldered a new dc jack on the board.
I was shocked when I went and looked for parts, that they were all readily available. Apparently, I am not the only one with these problems.
Get a Dell.

I have a Dell Latitude and my LCD screen failed on that at 2.5 yrs. I think it is a crap shoot with any PC.

Re: Dell or Toshiba
It really all depends. As you can see on responses already. Some people don't have any problems with their Dell's and would buy one again while someone else gets one that has problems and wouldn't buy one if their life depended on it. It's the same story of people who buys a Toshiba, or even IBM's. It's just a matter of what you feel comfortable with and getting one with the features that you like.

Re: Dell or Toshiba
I have a Latitude D630 like hos and I absolutely love it. 14.1" screen, lightweight, and most importantly, still a full-size keyboard. The only complaint I might give, and this is true of all Dell laptops, they're all I deal with at work, is that after a while the lid will start to get a little loose and get the "Dell Wobble".
It's not real noticeable but if you're working while riding in a car a lot or something you'll notice it. Otherwise, I absolutely love this machine. Just do us all a favor and don't monetarily support Vista
