Computer Question!

So me and some friends were bored the other day and we decided we would play some age of empires. This was when everyone was at my house so we had like 3 computers hooked up on the LAN and the game worked perfectly. Then another time we played and all three of us were on different networks and that also worked fine. But if we every try playing a mix where some people are at there house and more than one person is on my network it doesn't work? Any ideas on how we could fix this? I tried looking this up on google but haven't had any luck!!

I would almost think you need everyone to join over the internet and not LAN.
