Changing Careers

A friend of mine in his 30's has decided to change careers. He doesn't know what he wants to do but he's decided to get out of the film industry. Was just curious if anyone has done this before especially in their 30's? And did you have to take a pay cut or what because you are starting at the bottom again.

I'm 35 and in grad school full-time with the goal of changing careers afterwards. For me, there will be a pay raise, not cut, because my previous careers were in the social services.

Have to do what makes you happy. I cant see myself doing computer work the rest of my life. Does he have a family to support?

Funny, that. I've always been interested in getting into the "film industry" if you know what I mean.

No he doesn't which is good for him. What I find weird though is his resume is for working on film sets and doesn't have any "regular" experience. I know I'd be hard pressed to switch careers because I don't know what anyone would hire me for.

What are you switching to? I'm in social services myself...

He could maybe go into a new studio. Could do something film related but not necessarily 100 percent film. May like being part of production. Would be tough to join any other profession without experience. Also may look at a tech school to get some education in something else.

He could start a filmed show on the internet about "Trouble in River I City." He has lots of material to draw upon.

You talk a big game until you have to strip down in front of 20 people and "do the nasty" like there's no tomorrow. Can you say performance anxiety? Ron Jeremy is the last of the old-time woodsmen. No chemicals needed - just cold hard masculinity with a touch of back hair. Go for the pornstar haircut though - it adds years to you life and about an inch on camera.

Ron Jeremy remains a freak. He is getting on in age and he still gets his share of spotlight.

A career? What's this "career" you speak of? I'm 44 and I've jumped careers about every 3 years, (or less) throughout my entire life.

First rule of thumb: Be prepared to live on $30,000 a year at the drop of a hat. Just about anyone can make $30,000. That means no debt, and having an emergency fund of 3-6 months. You also need a "fall-back" skill that is in demand on a contract labor basis to bide you through hard times. (Mine is airplane mechanic. My secondary is military contracting. There is ALWAYS demand for a guy who will go anywhere and do anything for a dollar.)

It is veeeery rewarding, though, to tell the boss to "shove it" and walk into another career. Plus, you never have to worry about getting bored with work, and there is actually a certain stability akin to job-hopping. Someone, somewhere, will always need a quick job-fill, as long as you have a wide and varied background.
