Have you ever heard of this???

So saturday my stupidity got the better of me and I left my Ipod in my pants when I washed them. Needless to say it was followed by words I can't repeat here and a broken Ipod covered in lint. After a couple hours of trying to tinker with it and get it to work (amazingly it didn't...) I eventually decided to move on and start looking at options for a replacement. Low and behold my mother heard from a colleague at work that this has happened to him before, and that he found a way to fix the problem. You leave it in a bag of rice and let it sit there for three days and supposedly it soaks up all the moisture and it's as good as new (I assume it's somewhat like cat liter on your garage floor, minus the annoying smell). Now, I have one day left till I open up the bag and see the results but it got me thinking. What other weird remedies are there out there to help cope with stupidity.

Supposedly you don't need the rice...just don't turn it on until it is COMPLETELY dry. You will short-circuit it if there is any moisture in it.

Not only have I heard of it, but I've done it....twice....and it worked both times Turns out I had two of those freaking shuffles that are the size of a quarter and left them clipped to my shorts after track two different days within 3 weeks and they went through the washer. Of course it was my mom's fault simply because she took clothes off my floor without asking if they were clean or dirty, and washed them.

Re: Have you ever heard of this???

i did the same thing with my cell phone a few years ago. i came home from the bar, thought i would be smart and wash my clothes at night. amazing the next morning while looking for my phone i can't find it.

the worst part of that was loosing all my contacts!!!! That sucked big donkey balls.

I had no luck with drying it out.

Re: Have you ever heard of this???

I've heard the same thing, as well as putting it in the oven at like 150 or something like that (fairly low) for 20 minutes or something. not long enough to melt but yeah. never had the "opportunity" to try.

A couple years ago I put my phone in the washer/dryer and needless to say it didn't work afterwards. My mom made me wait 6 months (as punishment for stupidity i guess) until i could get a new phone.

Sounds like something that belongs on Mythbusters.

Kinda true but I'd suggest drying it out as quickly as possible as if moisture remains for prolonged periods it causes problems as well. I've heard to the rice thing, for me I dry electronics out either by letting them sit in a sunny area or a very low temp in the oven(more risky). The oven thing works well on cell phones as I've resurrected 3 of them in there, one of them 3 times.

Re: Have you ever heard of this???

Not an Ipod person myself and I believe the battery is locked in place but with cellphones, while very helpful if you remove it, I've done it both ways and the biggest loss I've seen is that if you don't remove it is that battery life is reduced, sometimes significantly(one phone I had made it so it only lasted 1 day, sometimes less)

Re: Have you ever heard of this???

I had a two-week span of brillance a few years ago where one Saturday night after getting caught in the rain, I tossed my pants in the dryer for awhile, phone in pocket. Couldn't get it working again, except if I plugged it into the charger I could get it to turn on so I could retrieve all my contacts, but I couldn't make a call. Fortunately I had just gotten a nice (at the time) phone- a Motorola V60- so I decided to get the insurance on it. Got a replacement for free. Then I put it in the washing machine a week later to the day. Got another one free and a nice roll of the eyes from the girl at AT&T when I came walking in with a sheepish look on my face, AGAIN.

Oh... people will come Mr. Pollard. People will most definitely come.

No, I don't live in Seattle anymore, I'm back in Des Moines but I don't feel like changing my username.

Wonder if this works if you drop your cell phone in a glass of pop.

If so, I sure could have used that a few years ago! I ruined the best phone I've ever owned.

Bliss to you!

Re: Have you ever heard of this???

I spilled some water on a keyboard a few years ago, so I went into Best Buy and bought the cheapest keyboard they had. The checkout girl asked what I did to my keyboard, and I asked how she knew? She said the only reason someone comes in and buys the cheapest keyboard they have is if something happened to theirs. True, true.

Oh... people will come Mr. Pollard. People will most definitely come.
