I think its a good idea for me to be goin into IT, I think it really sucks that the sterotypical IT guy is a little bit different. I'm really not like that, I just really like computers and have always wondered how they work. I really don't like that companies are cutting these jobs, because a good IT guy can really help a companies productivity. Which of course is the bottom line!

Some companies are cutting these yes, but others are adding just as fast. If you have good people skills, and computers come easy, then you will advance in IT.

How many times do you need to be reviewed? Is that a bad sign? -

The biggest reason they are asking the government to let in more high tech workers is because people who need visa sponsorship will work for less money and generally stay with the company that sponsors them until they become a citizen or get permanent resident status. Often when these employes become citizens they ask to get paid the same as their US counterparts and have to leave to get the pay and are replaced with more sponsored employees. I have a friend from the states who works in gerrmany. For the german company to hire him the company he works for has to fill out a lot of paper work documenting they can’t find a German to do the job. In addition, they have to pay him the same as they pay Germans in that position. If the US truly needs more high tech workers i wish they would create a similar law here. -

Or they were worried about you seeing their porn. Or they take seriously "doctor-patient privilege"

If that would have been their argument I might have sided with them. Apparently those docs were poor negotiators. -

If a laptop (or PC) is owned by the hospital (or corporation) they should have no expectation of privacy. A doctor in all likelihood may not be properly following HIPAA Security rules if he does have confidential information on his laptop anyway so he could get in trouble for that. If he was was in compliance with HIPAA, access to the laptop by IT personnel, who probably are responsible for helping staff be in compliance to HIPAA in the first place, wouldn't matter. Yeah, odds are more along the lines of 95% chance he doesn't want you to see his porn.

I would think growing your own could work this way - write an agreement if IT person gets two weeks of paid training somewhere that he agrees to work the next year or pay back the training costs. The coimpany is willing to invest in improiving their skills if the employee agrees to stay longer after gaining new skills. Most of our IT people have good personalities - I know of another company where the people are not as firendly. You get what you hire. All I know is the IT people need to keep up in their fields m,ore than most other professionals as the field is continuing evolving. CIOs, CFOs, CEOs - pay me now or pay me later.
Looking forward to CFH magic for the next bball season, Georges style. -

Doctors make the hospital money, IT doesnt. Thats how administration looks at it. The doctors cry, the administration gets them a pacifier. Its the one thing I dont miss about working there.
The funny thing is, when it comes down to it IT may not make a place money, but it sure can cost it. If you dont treat your IT staff well or dont train them and something fails, database goes down, mass exodus, etc it can cost the company a fortune. It pays to be kind to IT. Like it or not, everything runs on it.
