You definetely wouldnt be dissapointed with Mizuno irons though

Re: New Golf Clubs
I wouldn't recommend any 'custom fit' clubs if there are any major swing flaws, thats just a band aid and can make things worse if the swing is fixed. I have a couple of sets of Mizunos two and have always loved them. IF I get to the point where I am playing a couple times a week I will probably switch back to my Mizuno blades. The forged iron they use feels like butter when you pure a shot!

I have the 905T and love it. I have a 907 D1 (the triangular one). It's a good driver, IMO, though better players would probably prefer the D2. It's super forgiving and doesn't sound like you are pounding a sledgehammer on an empty barrel. A lot of people are still hitting 905Rs though, so take that for what it's worth. Everyone seems to be waiting on the D4 which should be out soon. Originally Posted by wheels686 Id go Taylormade for the Woods I'd avoid buying any new Taylormades, though. To be perfectly honest, I'd get him something cheap until he fixes the obviously major swing flaws. The Wilson Deep Red irons I've heard good things about and they are dirt cheap. That'll do him just fine until he gets down around the 20s. RockBottomGolf.com - Wilson Golf- Deep Red Hybrid Irons 3-PW Graph/Steel
Throw in a used driver (preferably a big square one if he can stand the noise and shape: Sumo2, Cally FT-I, Nickent 3DX etc.) and an e-bay putter and he's got a decent set for under 300 bucks. I wouldn't worry about long woods (3/5) at the moment.
I'm currently playing:
Titleist 907 D1 9 degree w/ Proto VS 65 Stiff
Mizuno F-50 strong 3 Wood (13.5degree) TTDG S300
Mizuno F-50 4 Wood TTDGS300
Mizuno F-50 5 Wood TTDGS300
(swap those all those out depending on the course I'm playing)
Ping I-3O 3-PW +.5 w/ JZ Stiff shafts w/ Cushin insert
Cleveland CG10 52/56/60 wedges
and a Ping Anser2 BeCu putter
And I'm very happy with all of it at the moment. I've got a Rapture I haven't hit yet that I've been meaning to.

I've never really liked using pings. Always felt weird in my hand, but aren't they coming out with more standard looking and feeling irons?

The older Ping stuff (Eye-2/2+, ISIs and whatnot) does have kinda an odd head shape. The I3s look a little more traditional.
I think they give plenty of feedback on mishits, but are still pretty forgiving. I get a little bit more confidence because it's a bit of a 'shovel'.
The S-59/58 (and soon to be S57) series is more of a blade. I also quite like the new I-10s. I'm waiting to get down to a smaller head once I get a bit better at the game, likely I3+ blades. I only started playing about 2 years ago, and I'm hoping to get my handicap down to around 15 this year.
I like the wedges too, but I tend to not hit them quite as far as i think I should. It's still sort of early in the year so my swing might not be all back yet though!

Re: New Golf Clubs
I got a brand new set of Nicklaus Premium clubs last year since I worked with Weitz and their golf division partnered with nicklaus, we got 65% on all golf stuff from Nicklaus Premium. When I ordered them I was able to select which type of shaft I wanted for my woods as my swing speed is around 115 so all my drivers, fairway woods, and hybrids are of all the same shaft and stiffness. Really helps.

Re: New Golf Clubs
I'd recommend the Ping G2 irons for your buddy or Callaway X18 or X16. They are 2 - 4 years old now so you can find a good deal on Ebay. TaylorMade drivers are good and they make a good draw version of their drivers which helps weekend golfers close the face and not hit the banana ball.
I play Mizuno MX25 irons and LOVE them. They are forged but also cavity back so good forgiveness with awesome feel.
I like my Titleist 907D2 driver and Titleist 585.Hybrid but wouldn't recommend the hybrid to a weekend golfer.
Dont forget the golf ball! The Bridgestone E5+ is only $24/dozen, soft cover for stopping power on the greens, long distance off the tee, equal or better than the Titleist ProV1 which costs $45/dozen

There's no way I'd spend 24 dollars a dozen as a weekend golfer. Top Flites are just fine. In fact, a low spin ball is probably what you're looking for. Nike juice or ignites are probably fine if you want something a bit higher up the food chain.
The E5/E5+ is a good ball, but it's closer to the NXT tour than the Pro-V1/V1X.

Re: New Golf Clubs
If your buddy is just a weekend golfer, don't go out and buy new high-end brand name clubs. Stick with used or lower end companies that offer decent clubs for a lower price. No club can change your game. Trust me, I see too many golfers these days buy the clubs that they see on tv so that their friends think they are the ****. This does nothing but empty your wallet. Don't get me wrong, the new technology of today will help, but it won't take you from a 25 handicap to a 15 or better. Golf is all about God given talent and time consuming hard work. The chances of your friend becoming very good with a huge upper body is slim, but I give him credit for taking up the game. My opinion would be to keep him at the range until he feels comfortable enough to go to a course. It can shatter his confidence to suck horribly the first time you go out; and can ultimately drive him away from the game. Also, help him with his short game. Even the great players like Geoff Ogilvy, struggle with the long game at times, but the man can get up and down from anywhere on the course.

Re: New Golf Clubs
Top Flite D2 Feel. $15 for 15 balls. Best value on the market.
Very good ball for a 10+ handicapper. I use them frequently and I'm a single digit.
