tell him to get some fitted clubs from the local pro, with some lessons thrown in. clubs don't make much difference unless you're a scratch golfer.

I told him to just fix his swing before buying new clubs. He is a big meat head so his swing is 95% upper body. If he actually used his legs he would absolutely crush the ball.

There's no way I'd spend 24 dollars a dozen as a weekend golfer. Top Flites are just fine. In fact, a low spin ball is probably what you're looking for. Nike juice or ignites are probably fine if you want something a bit higher up the food chain.

The E5/E5+ is a good ball, but it's closer to the NXT tour than the Pro-V1/V1X.
    I agree, a hybrid is a must over a 3 and 4 iron

In testing, the Bridgestone E5 is longer off the tee and has more spin around the green.. Great ball for anyone as the most strokes are around and on the green. The Titleist ProV1 is good but overrated, the NXT is better for the money

Don't get me wrong, the new technology of today will help, but it won't take you from a 25 handicap to a 15 or better. Golf is all about God given talent and time consuming hard work. The chances of your friend becoming very good with a huge upper body is slim, but I give him credit for taking up the game. My opinion would be to keep him at the range until he feels comfortable enough to go to a course. It can shatter his confidence to suck horribly the first time you go out; and can ultimately drive him away from the game. Also, help him with his short game. Even the great players like Geoff Ogilvy, struggle with the long game at times, but the man can get up and down from anywhere on the course.
Spending $50 on a lesson and actually doing what the pro tells you afterwards no matter how weird it feels is a much better investment than new clubs...........most people get a lesson then go back to their old ways because the pro's way doesn't "feel right"........

    Re: New Golf Clubs

I say tell him to get whatever he wants. He's not joining the PGA tour and neither is anybody here--it boils down to what feels good in your hands, what gives you confidence at address. If that's a Kmart club, fine. If it's Ping, great. The bottom line is having fun. I'm probably the only person here who will admit that he is no better than an 18 handicap--and I play 2-3 times a week. I just love the game, and that is all that matters!

I've never liked the hybrids. I love my 3 Iron and I love hitting stingers with it. The only time I wish I had a hybrid is when I have a questionable lie, but then I just hit a soft 5 wood which I also love doing.

I get so frustrated with my friends when they don't listen to the pro. Yes, you may play bad and feel weird the next few rounds but overall you are going to be a much better golfer. I have a friend who's main problem is his grip. He has a very open grip with his right hand so everytime he hits the ball its a low hook. But he refuses to change it and if he did he would probably knock 10 strokes off of his game.

    Re: New Golf Clubs

Alot of their club choice depends on how much they want to spend. There is some places in illinois that sell knock off's of the real thing. They are actually made from the same factory as some of these name brands. Harder to find those stores though. Tour Edge is a good company for quality cheaper equipment. I prefer Titleist and Mizuno though

I got a set of Tommy Armour irons at RockBottomGolf.com - Discount Golf Clubs, New Golf Clubs and Equipment from TaylorMade, Adams Golf, Mizuno, Tommy Armour, Ram, Hippo, Wilson, Nike, Bag Boy and Ogio. last year and absolutely love them.
I didn't spend a ton on them, but they are much better than the cheap old set that I got in high school.

ABSOLUTELY DO NOT BUY FROM KNOCK-OFF DEALERS. They may look the same and cost about half as much, but they are in no way the same as the real thing. A lot of the time they are a totally different alloy, weigh more or less, and will not even come close to performing the same. Like some of you have stated before, changes are not going to come over night. It's like anything else, you have to train your brain to make these "changes" become permanent. As a golf pro myself, I know how hard it is for someone that plays as little as a weekend golfer to make and stick with a swing change. Like anything else if it doesn't feel "right" or comfortable the tendency is to go back to the way the does. But you have to stick with it and PRACTICE. Playing once or twice a week isn't going to change anything.

Should I buy in a pro shop or a golf discount store?

    Re: New Golf Clubs

Before I became a pro, I would buy from places like Golf Galaxy, Kinley's, Austad's, and other golf stores. There isn't anything wrong with those places at all. Most of the time places like Wal-Mart and Target aren't bad places to buy from as well. Online stores like golfsmith.com, edwinwattsgolf.com or tgw.com are great to buy from as well and have sales all the time. Too many golfers buy off of eBay and that is probably the worst place you can buy from. Yes most of the time you can find a deal, but you don't know who the seller is. Most of the knock-off clubs made in the Far-East are sold on eBay and look just like the real stuff. So beware the next time you but from eBay. And by the way I have learned my lesson from buying bogus goods off that site.

I don't have any of these knock off clubs myself but there are actually some that are made the same and made from the same factory just with a different logo. The problem is finding these clubs and knowing which ones they are. I love my titleist clubs alot. I really want mizuno but they dont make my clubs left handed. TGW.com is a great place to find deals online. Its where I got most of my clubs at

    Try this place:

    Custom Golf Clubs by Pinemeadow

I bought a set of irons (imitation of the Nike combos) and a square-head driver (theirs is the Bloc) from them. Great quality, excellent service, and an even better price. As someone who plays a handful of times per year, there's just no need to spend hundreds of $$ on high-end golf clubs that won't help a bit.

You CAN buy off e-bay, but you have to be very careful. Anything "new" on E-bay is suspect. Get a serial number from the seller and check it with the manufacturer. I tend to buy either from wholesalers like rockbottomgolf or from people on forums like golfwrx.com who are pretty picky about things.

Knock-offs and forgeries are rampant and mostly garbage.
