    Re: New Golf Clubs

I was at Golf Headquarters today looking at irons. Any input from others would be great, I haven't hit any of these yet, but what are your opinions of the following: Adams A 3OS for 599.99 (new), Cleveland CG Gold 599.99 (new), TaylorMade R7 Draw reg. 599.99 for 399.99 (new), and Callaway X-18 for 599.99 (pre-owned and in great shape). Thanks for the input.

I've heard good things about the CG Golds and the X-18s. I avoid TaylorMade stuff on principal, and I don't know why the hell you'd want draw biased irons,

I haven't heard anything about the Adams irons. I read a lot about golf equipment, so I take that as a pretty bad sign. They make great fairway woods/hybrids though.

It's all sort of a personal preference thing with golf clubs. In that price range, I might take a look at Wilson Staff Ci7/Pi7 or Ci5/Pi5 clubs. They are VERY solid and one of the better deals in golf. Padraig won the Open Championship last year playing Pi5s. (The CiX clubs are more GI clubs than the Pi clubs). You could probably pick up Ping G5s new for around 550 as well.

Hell of a lot easier to buy sticks that close (square-up) your clubface than learning how to swing them the right way.

Does anyone hit the Callaway X-20 Tours? Any thought's on them or similar irons? Ping I10, Miz MP-57 , Cleve CG Red.

    Re: New Golf Clubs

thanks for your input. best thing I think is to hit them and just go with what feels best. The owner of the shop said for the money, the Adams were the best set he had in the store by far. he did say they are more known for woods and hybrids.

I can kinda understand that in woods or maybe hybrids, but it makes very little sense in irons.

If you've got a slice with a 7 or 8 iron, no amount of weighting is going to fix your ball flight. Might maybe help with long(er) irons, but just play hybrids down to 5 or so and that becomes a non-issue.

Haven't seen the "draw" irons personally, but I assume the 'draw' factor is progressive, much like the offset in most game improvement cast irons. The offset in your wedge is minimal compared to your 3 iron - I assume the weighting and closed face would be the same in the draw irons.

Most slicers don't get their spin just from an outside in swing, they combine it with an open club face. The problem in the swing is still there regardless of their club selection, but with 7 iron - W just not as big of an issue with the shorter length club = more square. And as a % of off distance due to the total distance of ball flight. IE 5% off target on a 100 yard shot = 15 feet, but 30 feet on a 200 yard shot. The draw faced club allows them to square it up, so if he is a slicer without the time/energy/$ to invest into learning it hit it without a slice, then they might be worth a test drive at least.
