Re: Any motorcycle people?
I'm going to go look at a 2004 Honda 919 tomorrow.
Re: Any motorcycle people?
We'll I went and test drove the 919 today and decided to pull the trigger. It's a 2004 with 2,100 miles and I got it for around $5,000. I can't pick it up until a week from Friday.
Re: Any motorcycle people?
Well I drove 130 miles to go and pick up the motorcycle. In that time I saw a ton of flooding a nearly froze to death. When I left the Waterloo area it was 75 and when I reached Des Moines it was 43.

dmclone- that's a very nice looking bike. I'm looking for a bike myself, and have really taken a liking to the sport bike without a fairing look. Is that a Honda CB? As far as I can tell they are similar to the CBR in every way except for the fairing, is that an accurate assessment?
Did you buy that from a dealership (and do they have any more like it?) or a private seller? Dang I'm jealous, that's pretty much exactly what I'm looking for and seems like a good price too!
Re: Any motorcycle people?
Excellent choice on the 919 dmclone. Like I said, I have an '02 and love it.
Be sure and check out the wristtwisters forum - there are a lot of 919 owners that post there.

Love the cruisers. Currently ride a 2003 Indian Chief and 1989 Softail Custom. Take a look at the '09 Chief.

Yeah it's officially called a CB900F but it uses the motor out of a CBR 919 (detuned a little).
I also looked at the Triumph Speed Triple and like it a lot but they are hard to find. I bought this one from a dealer in northern Iowa.
The Indianola Honda dealer has a 2002 for around $5,000. I acutally like the color of it better than my color but the one that I bought was 2 years newer with 5,000 fewer miles.
These naked bikes are a lot better for old guys like myself who don't want to crouch down all the time.

I've been on there for a few weeks. Lot of good info.

Denny could have picked a better color.... But hey, free bike!
Re: Any motorcycle people?
So I've never owned or ridden a motorcycle in my life, but I am interested in them. Any tips? I'd like to stick with a non-crotch rocket-esque bike, but more dirt bike style... I don't know if there's anything street legal that is that style. Also, what's the gas mileage of a typical bike? What are the ownership costs beyond the purchase price? How difficult is it to get a license? Sorry for all the questions!
Re: Any motorcycle people?
I've got a 73 r75 BMW which I don't ride much and an 05 Bonneville. I'd like to have a Triumph Tiger for longer trips.

There are plenty of street legal bikes that are like dirt bikes, they're usually called Enduro bikes.
If you've never ridden before at all, you might consider taking the motorcycle safety course, there's a list of times and locations on the Iowa dmv website. I took it at DMACC when I was in college, even though I pretty much new how to ride already. I think it was around $70 to take, which I didn't think was too bad. The benefit is, if you pass the course you don't have to take the riding test at the dmv, just the written test. I think some insurance companies will give you a discount if you've taken the safety class in the last few years.
