Looks like the compromise passed the House and will likely pass the Senate as well shortly.
No smoking anywhere indoors except for Iowa Veterens and Casinos (gambling floor only). Restaurants and Bars in casinos will be no smoking.
Stupid about the 2 exemptions, but at least all restaurants and bars and all other indoor places of business will not allow it. House Passes Indoor Smoking Ban - Politics News Story - KCCI Des Moines | | |

Interesting. Being out of Iowa I had not seen the developments.

It is the same thing almost that they passed before only thing different is they added casino bars and restaurants to it.
I doubt it passes the senate in this form and if it doesn't I think it will be a dead issue for this term

wasn't it the representatives that were striking it down earlier? if so this is a step forward. Is the bill perfect? No, but it 100 times better than what we have now.

The House was going to be the harder area to get it passed through.....Gronstal said they won't bring it up for discussion until he knows they have the votes to pass it.

I hope it gets voted down in the senate, its an example of the government overstepping its bounds, has no right to regulate private businesses. I don't even like smoking, I find it detestable but if people feel like putting the crap in their body, fine with me, it should be up to the establishments to decide if they want the habit there.

They should either ban it in all public places or give it up. These exemptions are stupid.

begin another endless thread on how the government should just stay out of our lives and how businesses across Iowa will be hurt because of this.
believe me, it's pretty darn nice to come home from a bar or even dinner and not wreak like an ashtray... here's the next problem that will have to be dealt with... all of the smokers will congregate just outside of a bar entrance... and you'll walk through an LA-like smog cloud when passing by such an establishment. Thats typically how it is in denver, boulder, and ft collins. These folks will smoke no matter what the temp is outside, nicotine trumps wind chill.

I'm not a fan of rap/hip hop so I'm more likely to go to a bar that doesn't play it. I just wish they would have let the free market work itself out so we could get a mixture of smoking and non-smoking bars to suit everybody's preferences.........but nope! we gotta interfere with entreprenuers and their business plan.

You can still smoke in private clubs from what I understand so you could open a "smoking club" and charge a membership fee if you want to be an entreprenuer. The rest of us will enjoy the public bars and restaurants and not worry about our well being.

Could not disagree with you more. We have something we know kills the workers are these places and we still subject them to this. This smoking ban is a great idea.

Maybe they can do what ISU does and make it not smoking within 15-20 feet of an entrance. (I think that is about right). At my work it is about 100 ft away from an entrance to smoke.
