I have a desktop computer that I don't use much...just kind of as a standby. It currently runs XP...I have never used Linux and have always wanted to install Linux on that machine to see what it was like. Any advice? Easy to do?
I have some experience with computers...not a lot. I have reformatted and reinstalled software from scratch before. Would putting Linux on that machine be overly difficult?
Thanks for the advice/guidance.

If you have never used it, download the Ubuntu distro. Its decent for everyday use. Just download it, burn it to a cd, and follow the directions when you boot to it. You can also test drive linux without installing any by using Knoppix and run it all from cd. Knoppix Linux Ubuntu Home Page | Ubuntu |

I HIGHLY recommend Ubuntu. I'm a linux "vet" and, while I am perfectly comfortable messing around with other distros, ubuntu makes everything crazy easy. It really is on par with Vista in most ways, and better in others, IMO.

knoppix rox for test drives. I think that Ubuntu has a live CD as well.
Ubuntu is probably the most popular consumer distribution, but Red Hat and Novell also make consumer versions that might be worth a try (fedora and open suse(?))
I gave up on Vista x64 at work and installed Centos (a Red Hat enterprise clone) - seems to work fine and I have no more trouble with it than I did with Vista. I'll eventually install a VM with XP to get the rest of the stuff that just doesn't like working through wine.

Im not a linux man by any means, but Im known to fire it up from time to time. Im a geek that way. Ubuntu seemed very compatible with most of my machines. I had a video card that didnt like it once, but that didnt stop me!

I am downloading as I type...do I just copy the downloaded file to a CD or will I execute this new file?

If you dont know how to burn an iso or dont have an app to do it, use this ISO Recorder v 2
Once installed all you have to do is right click on the iso file and select burn. Its a great app, tiny, and can make isos as well.

What brianhos said.
It will actually boot into Ubuntu when you put the CD in. This will let you test your hardware compatability. Then you just click on the little "install" shortcut, and it'll install ubuntu in the background while you begin working with it.

Speaking of open source software, this weekend I finally downloaded open office on my new laptop. I think I like it more than MS Office.

I have MS Office 2003 (got it for free from a rep) but after playing around with OpenOffice I am not sure I would ever pay for MS Office. I like OpenOffice as well!
