Real Hollywood War Hero
Charles Durning = The Man. I had no idea that this guy had this background. 1st wave landing on the beaches of Normandy, stabbed 7 times, and killed the guy who was trying to kill him. National Memorial Day Concert . World War II . Charles Durning: Decorated Normandy War Veteran | PBS
Dude had serious stones.

Re: Real Hollywood War Hero
Check out this "hollywood actor's" war record. He stared in nearly 50 movies including "To Hell and Back", his own a****iography. Of course, he's still better remembered for his military exploits. Audie Murphy (I) Audie Leon Murphy, son of poor Texas sharecroppers, rose to national fame as the most decorated U.S. combat soldier of World War II. Among his 33 awards and decorations was the Medal of Honor, the highest military award for bravery that can be given to any individual in the United States of America, for "conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty." He also received every decoration for valor that his country had to offer, some of them more than once, including 5 decorations by France and Belgium. Credited with either killing over 240 of the enemy while wounding and capturing many others, he became a legend within the 3rd Infantry Division. Beginning his service as an Army Private, Audie quickly rose to the enlisted rank of Staff Sergeant, was given a "battle field" commission as 2nd Lieutenant, was wounded three times, fought in 9 major campaigns across the European Theater, and survived the war.

It sounds like he was a survivor of the Malmedy Massacre. If you don't know what it is then you need to look it up. It'll make you appreciate this even more.

Myth. He never served in the military.
But after Mr. Smith (James Stewart) Went to Washington, he flew B-25s in combat in WWII, and eventually retired from the Air Force Reserve as a Brigadier General.
Here is a pretty decent list of famous movie actors/actresses who served with distinction: Hollywood On The Flip Side ~ by The PalletMaster's Workshop®
Hedy Lamarr, however, is one of the unsung heroes of WWII. While she was widely considered the most beautiful woman in the movies prior to the war, in reality, she was also a world-class physicist, who successfully solved the problem of early US torpedoes not detonating early in the war. In the process of solving this problem, she and her co-worker are credited with inventing modern torpedo guidance systems. Hedy Lamarr - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
My guess is no-one in today's Hollywood is anywhere near as brave or talented as the above list of folks are. And more's the pity for that.

Got any links? Our enemies have been savage. There have been some poor behaviors in our ranks, but generally we value life a little more than some of the others.

I'll take a look. If you ever get the chance to read "Flag of Our Fathers" it'll be in there. They hit on it a little bit, but not a lot.
Another, more notorious, event was the Rape of Nanking. I believe that this is still a point of contention between China and Japan. To think, at one time China was an ally and Japan was the enemy.
