Airport-area restaurants?
Going to be picking up my brother Sunday evening from the DSM. Anyone have any suggestions for restaurants very close by?

If the Crystal Tree is still open, it has really good food and is close to the airport. It is a bit pricey though.

Johnny's Italian Steakhouse right on the other side of Army Post is as good as it gets. Up Fluer a bit is Skips, same owner as Nicks by Valley West. Francies has good bar food. There is also the Tavern a little east on Army Post.

I'm quite familiar with the Crystal Tree. If it was just my wife and I, maybe, but we'll have my 12 year old brother and our 2 year old so probably not.

Johnny's you won't be disappointed.

Re: Airport-area restaurants?
I think Crystal Tree is closed.
My recommendations are Johnny's, Skip's, Mezzodi's and/or Francie's. You really can't go wrong at any of them.
Tavern is up the road a ways, and there are a few other "chain" restaurants not crazy far away.
There's also Orlando's on Park, which isn't too bad, but has a very bar atmosphere.
If you're in the mood for Chinese, I can't recommend Tsing Tsao enough. Dirt cheap too.
Honestly, it's not far from downtown either and there are a TON of places down there with great food.

The grass always looks greener, on the other side of the fence, but the dog over there might be meaner, on the other side of the fence… Stay in your own yard, play in your own yard! -
Re: Airport-area restaurants?
I would recommend Barrata's. Baratta's Restaurant -
Re: Airport-area restaurants?
Francie's is owned by the same people as Nick's and Skip's if you didn't know.
I would go Johnnie's and then Tsing Tsao. We lived behind Tsing Tsao for 8 years and I spent alot of time at those two places as well as Francie's.
At Johnnie's I would get the sausage stuffed mushroom appetizer. They are my second favorite appetizer in Des Moines trailing only Buzzard Billy's Armadillo Eggs. It also depends on budget and time of day. If you are looking to spend less you should really go to Tsing Tsao. The one on the south side is the best of the three they own in Des Moines.

Re: Airport-area restaurants?
Theres a bar just north of it that we went to and they had great food and a good atmosphere. Can't think of the name to save my life, but i hardly ever venture that far south anymore. Sorry. Maybe someone else can think of it.
