Just curious for some good, random, not well-known movies that you all love. I'm always looking for some new flicks to check out.
Mine would be, in no order:
Waiting For Guffman (same troupe as Best In Show, only this is 10 times funnier. One of the funniest movies ever made)
Dr. Strangelove (Stanley Kubric's hilarious satire on war)
The Descent (one scary-*** movie)
Requiem for a Dream (horrible and devastating, but so well made I think all high schools should show it in class)
Flirting With Disaster (Ben Stiller, Josh Brolin, Patricia Arquette, Tea Leoni, Alan Alda, Lily Tomlin. Hilarious movie)
Shallow Grave (Directed by Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later, Sunshine) this is with Ewan McGregor and is a top-notching thriller. Gruesome)
True Romance (some may have heard of this, but it was NOT popular when it came out in 1994. Written by Quentin Tarantino, directed by Tony Scott. Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette, Brad Pitt, Val Kilmer, James Gandolfini, Dennis Hopper, Christopher Walken, Gary Oldman, Tom Sizemore. This is a crime/action movie that is so great. Has one of the most brutal scenes to sit through in any movie I've ever seen...for those that have seen it, it's the scene with Arquette and Gandolfini in the hotel room.)
What are yours?

True Romance is one of my fave five movies overall.

Mine too. I own it but it's never in my hands because it's one a ton of my friends have never seen so I loan it out a lot. That movie is great.
To my list above...I would also add Blood Simple. It's the Coen Brother's first movie ever. My favorite one of theirs.

Amelie - Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain, Le (2001)
City of Lost Children - Cité des enfants perdus, La (1995) Amores perros (2000)
I'm sure I'll think of some more. There are a lot of Gems out there that no one has ever seen. Shawshank was a flop in theaters but become the highest grossing VHS rental of all time the following year. Some of these films have the same distinction.

My wife constantly rents stuff on Netflix that I don't think was ever even advertised, and some of it is pretty good. Some not. | |
