YouTube Question

So I'm about 4 years behind on technology, but I've just now started a YouTube account and would like to add some videos. Can I do it straight from DVD onto YouTube or do I have to save it to my computer first?

Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating.

Re: YouTube Question

You need to convert them to mpeg if they are not in that format already.

Re: YouTube Question

I had a YouTube account with about 6 videos, and it got shut down. I recorded a BSO appearance on Conan and uploaded it, and NBC complained. I recorded a Zombies clip from one of those PBS beg-a-thons and uploaded it, and TJ Lebenski complained. I had a short clip from the Bernie Mac show that I recorded up for about two years, and then Fox finally found it and complained, and my account got shut down. I guess that was my third strike...

Re: YouTube Question

Youtube is supposed to host content that you own, not stuff that you've ripped from a DVD.

Now, they make exceptions for novelty stuff, like old commercials and whatnot, and stuff that's "fair use", but not generally for copyrighted stuff from the last 15-20 years or so.

Do I need a certain program to do that, or can I do it with realplayer or the Windows program?

These are all originals. Clips of me singing so when someone calls wanting a sample for a wedding or whatnot, I can just give them a link rather than mailing the DVD that I have been doing for a few years.

Not knowing much about your DVD, it's hard to know what needs to be done, but you will likely need some additional software.

The files on the DVD are basically MPEG files. However, they may just be fixed length files that contain multiple songs and split right in the middle of a song...or maybe not...it all depends how long the DVD is and how the person who made the DVD did the layout. Could you just get the individual digital clips of your songs from the person who made the DVD for you? That would save some work.

I haven't uploaded to YouTube since my account got shut down, but they did have a file size limit. Anything but short clips will be too big, and you will need some some software to resample your song clips to get them under the file size limit. I use Nero and Super C for resampling, but there are many other programs that do this. Super C can also convert between formats.

Also, once you upload your mpeg files to YouTube, YouTube is going to convert them to Flash movies. YouTube used to have a help page that explains some of this.

You are now obligated to share the link with Cyclone Fanatic. I, for one, am particularly excited.

They don't have to be in mpeg format. They just have to be in one of the many formats that youtube can transcode from.

They do recommend mpeg4 though. You might be best served buying a commercial solution like Extract Video Clip From DVD, Convert DVD Movie Clip For Youtube . You can do it with free tools, but it's not nearly as simple.
