Tracking running distance

I was curious if anyone uses any type of running watch/device to track mileage while running? And if so, what type or what you would recommend?

I assume Sports Authority or Scheels might have something...

Thanks for the help.

What we've done is after a run, I'll get on google earth and track the streets we ran and it tells us the mileage.

Same here, I just map out my route ahead of time.

Re: Tracking running distance

When I ran in the fall I used the Nike+ system that goes with an ipod. After my upcoming knee surgery I plan to get running again and pick up the new Nike+ Sportband so it's easier to read (sits like a watch on the wrist).

The Nike+ only works on ipod nanos, but the Nike+ Sportband is completely separate from the ipod.

How accurate are these things without GPS?

It's basically a pedometer that saves your distance, pace, etc. I've compared the distance it gives me to what I find on mapmyrun or the usatf site and it's accurate almost every time. Like 95% of the time, and when it's off it's only .05 or .1 of a mile which to me isn't a big deal.

Of course, if you calibrate it wrong, it'll be farther off.

Garmin Forerunner would be a good tool. I use the Garmin Edge on my road bike and love it.

Formerly known as "newisufan".

I have used the Nike+ for about 6 months and had great luck with it.

Re: Tracking running distance

If you really want to track your training go with the Garmin 305. You will not be disappointed with it accuracy and the amount of info you can track. You can also upload your workouts to their website and it will plot the course you ran using Google maps. You can also pay additional fees and work one on one with trainer from the website.

Re: Tracking running distance

my garmin 305 is great but occasionally loses signal with the sats, but that is not a big deal.
